In the process of getting my car ready for paint but have a few questions. Have stripped old paint off and down to mostly primer with some areas of filler and gelcoat. Is an adhesion promoter necessary over the filler and gelcoat? Is there a particular type of paint that is required for under the hood due to the engine bay heat or will any matt black do? Does the stainless trim around the t tops come off or is it easier to mask and paint?
I'll be coach painting it with enamel using a roller and a brush to lay off, the paint supplier suggested an undercoat then a high build primer for the best finish, is this overkill and can I skip the undercoat? When painting the door jams does it make sense to remove the strikers or mask off? And finally, when fitting the rear exhaust filler panel, does it require bonding to the strips on the body or is it only held in with the 2 bolts behind the license plate?
Does the T Top Trims come off? Yes, they are screwed and riveted on the bottom side and the rivets need to be drilled out before removing they may also have been stuck on with weatherstrip adhesive.
Once the rivets are removed tap it off carefully you don't want to bend them, once off they can be shined up!
Should they come off? Yes so you can remove all the old paint.
