Default Mystery Wire

Can anyone the purpose of this wire ? To me, I would guess its some sort of hood light. Have no idea where it plugs into and if it is a light, it doesn't seem to have a bulb of any sort. the wire runs from the plug and up the hood and seems to end at the top center as in the pictures.

That looks like the wire to the under hood light on my ‘77.

After further research it looks like the ‘75 may not have come with a light under the hood. I may have thrown you a red herring. Sorry about that!

Looks like yours is missing the actuator (located under the plate located at the rear center of hood in your picture) should have a 2 conductor wire with two plugs on it that runs along the drivers side of the hood to plug into the plugs in your picture

Hello Vinnie--always glad to help a fellow '75 owner.

Here are some pics from my '75. Hood insulation has been removed to make it easier to see the harness.

The two-wire harness plugs into the connector you are holding into your hand. The harness runs up the drivers side of the hood, turns towards the center of the hood and is tucked under the plate that holds the cowl induction actuator and damper. There is a bump in the plate that allows the wire to run under it.

Wiring is to the right of the hood support

Wiring is to the right of the hood latch and proceeds diagonally to the damper/actuator plate

Remove the 6 hex head bolts to access the damper and actuator.

I hope this helps.

Was that an option? Maybe L82 only? My 75 doesn't have any wiring or motors for the cowl induction.

VinniePG had asked me via PM where the cowl induction air damper actuator harness plugs in. I though I would share with the Forum.

On my '75, it plugs into the connector located above and to the left (as you sit in the driver's seat) of the driver's side headlamp actuator. With the hood up, the harness runs down the hood, under the front edge of the hood and plugs into the connector shown in the pic. It plugs into the same connector in the same spot on my '73 as well

Steve Stroman asked if the cowl induction system was an option. As 60 SHARK mentioned it was not. It was standard equipment with all engines for model years 1973, 1974, and 1975.

73 and 75.

I think i am getting closer. my car looks exactly like yours, removed the padding and wire runs up the side and under the cowl as you described. I see your connection, my car is not original. the previous owner had the headlight actuators removed and replaced with electrical components. As I look at your picture, the connector i have should plug into the black & white connector. That is what I do not see. is the B/W connector in the engine harness? I will look to see if the wires were cut off. Also, how does the system work? what turns it on?

Hello VinniePG--The wires are a black wire and a tan wire. The connector is black. The forward wiring harness runs directly underneath the front surround. It contains the wiring for the headlamp system, parking lamps, side marker lamps, the horn, and this cowl induction damper actuator. Look up from underneath the front end for this harness. Look for the tan wire (12V) and the black wire (grnd) coming off the harness by the driver's side headlamp and terminating at the connector your are looking for.

The cowl induction damper is actuated by a switch located behind the accelerator pedal. When you floor the pedal, the pedal hits the plunger on the switch, closing the switch, sending 12V via this black/tan harness to the actuator located under that removable panel on the underside of your hood. Connected to the switch is a tan wire in and and a tan wire out. On the GM wiring diagram it is called the ""Hood Air Door Control Switch". When the damper opens cold air is sent to the carburator from the windshield/cowl area. On the GM wiring diagram it is called the "Hood Air Door Sol"

When I refer to the GM wiring diagram, I am refering to the wiring diagram contained in the "1975 Chervrolet Service and Overhaul Manual Supplement" All other wiring diagrams are copies (some poorly) from the wiring diagrams contained inside this book

I apologize for bringing up an old thread, but since I would have no idea how to describe this particular connector, and I found a thread on this exact one, I thought this would be my best bet to get forum members to understand what I'm asking about.
I have a '73 with an original cowl induction hood intact, and I want to remove the hood to repaint and refurbish the latches, etc. Unfortunately, I can't do anything yet because what should be the easiest part of the job is holding me up!
The connector from the wires coming from the cowl induction unit, down the underside of the hood, and out to the back of the driver's side headlight by the vacuum actuator where it connects to the harness.....won't come apart!
I have sprayed it inside and out with WD-40 and tried to spread that upper part of the female harness off the tab on the male end, but for the life of me, I can't get them apart! It moves imperceptibly in the connector like it's loose, but won't come off indicating that I'm missing something...but I have no idea what. I find it hard to believe that there is anything else holding it together other than that tab near the top, but even after spraying with WD-40 and prying that upper part up off the tab on the male end, it won't come apart!
Can anyone give me some ideas/help on this, please!

PS....I would include a pic but don't know how to do that.
