Default Loose clutch

New owner of a 1977 C3 here, as I was driving home last night I went to shift into 2nd leaving a red light and my clutch went straight to the floor with no resistance. It wouldn’t go into gear at all and the clutch is just freely moving up and down. Any suggestions on what the issue is or how to fix it?

Start by looking under your master cylinder. You will see rods and levers to your clutch.

There is a threaded rod coming from the fire wall. It has two adjustment nuts on it. Then there is a 3/8 inch pin that goes to the lever down to the clutch. The pin is held to the lever with one small cotter pin. This could have fallen off.

Also check under the dash to see if the weld broke on the petal where it meets the brake pedal. Also check the clutch fork to see if it snapped. Jerry

The cotter pin?

Does the clutch pedal return to the up position? Check all of the clutch linkage first.
When this happened to me, it was a pressure plate spring failure.
The second time it was the pivot ball that goes into the block.

the clutch movies freely up and down but you can feel that there is nothing happening. The most I can do is turn the car on if I press the clutch all the way down but I can’t put it the car into gear.

You need to have someone press on the clutch pedal and look at the clutch fork at the transmission to see if it is moving.

can you start the car in gear when stepping on the clutch? in first, it should crank along and catch and drive. shifting is a pita with disabled clutch but better than waiting on and paying for a tow. if you start it in gear and it doesn't move, it is the pressure plate or disc failed. rare. my sister killed a pressure plate driving a falcon stuck in 3rd. slipped clutch until she heated it enough to soften the springs. i killed a disc in the same falcon by pulling it down into first at highway speed cuz it sounded neat. synced first. clutch spun higher and higher until i threw off all the friction material. pissed my dad off. moral of story is it is unlikely the disk or pressure plate failed unless you let a 17 year old eff it up. most likely linkage unhooked issue.

Simple check: get on your back on the floor, with your legs outside the car, look under the dash. On the back of the clutch pedal, about halfway up, there is a nub, connected to the nub should be a rod coming from the firewall. This is where mine broke, the pins holding the rod to the nub on the clutch pedal gave way, disconnecting the rod from the pedal, giving me a completely floppy pedal

UPDATE: Soooo I took it to a transmission specialist and they said that the bellcrank bracket is missing. The part is apparently hard to find so they can’t give me an estimate just yet. Also they need to completely take the transmission apart to see why the clutch isn’t working.

This is the clutch bell crank bracket for an '80-82. The earlier models used a weld in bracket. Zip corvette has these. About $14. If you still need a "weld-in". bracket, send me a PM.

There is no reason to take the transmission 'apart' for a clutch problem. The transmission needs to be removed...but no disassembly should be needed.

More to the point... If the bellcrank bracket is "missing" then there is no need to remove the transmission at all.
