I am looking to by a new AC compressor, but I see two types. R4; 1 Groove; 12:00 Coil; 4.97in Diameter; 1.2in Groove and 1.0 groove. What does all that mean? 78 pace car.

What are you trying to do? Replace the original compressor? Upgrade? Startng from scratch? R-12 or 134?
easy enough to just go to napa buythe best available and should fit…changed a few in last couple years on a 79..if you need help.
r4- your oem size model type
1 groove..= 1 belt vs some that have 2…assuming v belt.
the rest sizng and clocking..

I have a leak somewhere. I got the new hose assembly, and thinking of changing out the compressor in order to take it out as the source of the leak. I added die to help find the leak, but so far, no luck finding the source. I can get a compressor, new R 134 o rings and the drier pretty cheap. I'd like to stay with the old refrigerant, but no shop will do that, so I guess I'll have switch over to R 134 seeing as I am right there anyhow. I suspect the compressor seal is leaking. I found a small leak in the
hose as well.

With pressure in the system, drip some soapy water on the Schrader valves, if it bubbles, that's a source of your leak. And they can easily be changed if that's the case.

i would inspect the orifice for any metal.. if clean i would NOT replace compressor.. however if you KNOW you have r12.. and switching to 134.. you need to flush system and new accumulator and change oil... flush compressor with new oil not cleaner..crap shoot on replacement compressors.. you MAY want to upgrade compressor to a sanden and a new condenser to help with 134..
see post 8 and 9... use compressed air to check for leaks..

Here's my 2 cents. If you need a new compressor, put in a Sanden. You will kick yourself later on if you don't.
Yes, you will need new mounting brackets.
Yes, you should change out your condenser to a parallel flow type.
Then with 134 you will get really cold air.
Or, read my thread, 73-E77 Air-con upgrade.
