Default 69 smog pump question

Does anyone know what is suppose to be in this hole and where to find one? All the other pumps I've seen don't even have a hole there.

From everything I have read and what I have seen over the last several decades, I believe that is not the correct smog pump for a 69 corvette unless it’s an L88. That version of the pump has a pressure release valve that goes in that hole and is also found on all 68 corvettes. The part number (according to NCRS) which is under the fan and not able to be seen when installed is probably 7801135. The part you need is 7805650.

Ed and Alan, are both correct.

Alan’s photo shows a pump with a pressure relief valve. This was used in 1968 on all Corvettes and on 1969 L-88 and L-88/ZL-1 cars. Ed is correct in that for your non L-88 1969, it typically would not have a pump with a pressure relief valve. Having said that, I recall that you have a VERY early 1969. In this instance, there is a possibility that it could have been used on your car originally… First, the part is stand alone in usage and is virtually identical in application to what was eventually used. Second, there are applications (although small numbers) through the model year that used this style of pump. Have you checked the date code? That would be my first order of business… It will give us a better idea of what we are working with.

Stan Falenski

If they came on all 68s, is it possible my car got one because it was built in mid Sept 68. It's not an L88 for sure.

Thanks Stan, I see you already answered my question about early 69s possibly getting one. Is the date code under the pulley as well?

There is a machined, semi-circular boss on the body of the pump. The date code is stamped into that area.

I've looked all over the pump and don't see anything stamped in it anywhere. Is it visible when mounted?

OK, I finally found the date code. That's a hard one to see when it's mounted in the car. I'll attach a picture. It's in a mirror so the image is reversed and not super clear. It looks like part of the number was rubbed off or didn't get stamped real good but from what I see it's 201Y. But it obviously didn't come on my car because if I'm reading it correctly it was made in 1970 on the 1st shift on the 2nd day of the year. But now I'm a little perplexed as I am with most things on this car. According to the Bizzoco book, the ones with a Y on the end were only for L88 cars. But L88s were not made in 70 sooooo what gives?

They used that Y code for other cars in the GM line. Many cars such as Chevelles, Camaros and Novas as well as other passenger cars all or most had smog equipment installed. I’m not up on all the codes, just the 68/69, and unfortunately, as you surmised, that doesn’t look like it belongs to that car. Although that one is typical in configuration to the L88, it’s not as though the smog pumps had a hi performance application. So it’s possible the same type smog pump used on an L88 could also go on a station wagon. If you are looking to go as original as possible I’m sure you could sell that one and not have to lay out much more (if any) for the one you need.

Hey Ed, it would probably be easier to sell mine if I had the pressure relief valve that goes in that hole. Do you know where I could find one?

There is a guy in Ohio, William Hodel that does a lot with GM smog stuff. A couple of years ago I bought a lot of pieces from him. My smog pump was a metric one and although it worked it didn't look correct on my 69, so I got a correct one from him.
He carries a lot of parts and it is possible that he might have what you need. When I bought from him is prices weren't cheap, but they were not crazy priced.
I think you can find his address and/or phone number somewhere on the Forum. If you can't find it, I will search thru my records for it.

Novice here but my understanding was most if not all early 69 BB cars had the 68 style pump with relief valve. Again early only.

Bill Hodel would be the guy. Maybe he will work out a trade without you having to get the valve and then try to sell it.

I see da..... hole!!!
someone put another pump on your car. That is a hole for the relief valve that should have with a black plastic insert and not a service replacement with a gold zinc plated insert
My early 69 435 built in October has the correct " non relief valve " and is dated late 68 so yours should be the same as per say.
I don't know the assembly date of your engine but pm me,
Also your smog bracket looks too new and feel on the middle inside if you have a fisher logo. If not you got a service replacement for 73 and up BB
I have to check what all early 69 pumps I have as I was collecting a bunch as spares.... I don't know why but I did. Also if you have an early 69 then on your diverter should have a V shaped bracket spot welded to the muffler. I can send you a pic, just pm me
I collected about a dozen 298 Diverters too. I have to stop hoarding....LOL

here is some pics, this is a smog pump dated August 4 1968 for an early 69 car as you can see no relief valve
also is the fisher logo on the original BB smog bracket and you can see the diverter with the Wire spot-welded
