Can I have some help here determining the value of something? I have a set of cylinder heads that I bought new about 20 years ago but only have a few hundred miles on them. They are NOS LT-1 heads. 2.02/1.60 valves, screw in studs, guide plates & double springs. They were new castings that I bought from a dealer in Lubbock Texas. They have a little surface rust on the guide plates and such but the valves, chambers & mating surfaces are rust free. I'm sure they would need stem seals replaced but they certainly do not look 20 years old. They have not been ported or polished and when they were on the car I had roller tip rockers on them with new pushrods. The last 3 casting numbers I believe are 486 or 186. You can barely tell that they ever had a head gasket touching them. I can get the casting numbers but it is zero degrees out right now and they are wrapped in plastic in the garage. I haven't looked at them in a few months since I wrapped them up and have had no need to read the casting numbers lately. But memory is starting to come back (possibly). I remember these being called "double hump" because of the accessory mounting surfaces looking just like that. Correct me if I'm wrong but I THINK the 186 casting was for the original head and the 486 for the NOS units. I had to part the car out shortly after I built it for financial reasons. I kept the heads only because I couldn't get what I spent on them at the time. I can get all casting numbers on them if needed as it is supposed to warm up in a day or so. My book shows 3991492 as th 1970 350 LT1 counter exchange head. Camel hump, with accessory holes, 64cc chambers and straight plugs. Maybe you could post the whole casting number. Either way they are a sought after head. I have seen them go from $250 that need work, up to what you have for about $500 a pair.

Thanks for the replies. I am sorry but when I said NOS I meant that is what they were when I bought them. I will get the actual casting numbers but am I only looking for that 8 to 10 digit number or does the forum need something else as well for accurate identification?

One more thing. They are straight plug and 64 CC. I will be posting the casting numbers soon.

Default got the #'s

OK. Here are the numbers I got off the heads. Both have casting number 3991492. There is also 492 on the other side of the heads in two places. On the same side as the complete casting number, by the springs, one head says GM56 the other GM53. Both heads also have J317 in the same general area. The 2 piece valve retainers (?) have a blue green tint on them at least 50 percent of them still have it. The large disc (?) that covers the top of the valve spring has a "V" and a "T" visibly stamped on them. They have dual springs and there is a visible orange stripe (paint?) on them. I could go way further to fully describe in detail the exact visual of them but at this point lets see what happens with this. I can take pictures and even put one head in the house and the other on my bench in the garage. I am not sure I can post pictures but anyone serious about inquiring about them or providing information I would certainly be willing to mail you photos if need be. These heads have been in my possession for about 20 years, were only on my car and have never been dropped or otherwise abused. They are cleaner than I thought, no rust on the valves or their stems that I can see. There was a bit of surface rust that developed on some smooth surfaces but it came off with a rag and WD-40. Other than dusting them off, I will not touch them further at this point. If I find no takers for them on this forum you can bet that I will clean them up. I feel with little effort they will appear as almost new and nicely maintained even after 20 years. Any thoughts, insight or offers would be appreciated. PM or e-mail me with any thoughts.
