I have some covers,where do I find number and how do I tell dates

I was wondering the same thing. I pulled the cover off my 70 and put a HD one on.

The dates are in the casting mold. You can see them on the right hand side and they read vertical. I believe there is a letter followed by a 2 digit day and a single letter for the year.
I could use one dated somewhere around Aug, 1968. That would be H xx 8.
