Thanks David,
Right now I just need the liners, but I appreciate the offer.
I'm taking off a Vpb 360# mono spring if you have any interest. I put all new pads on it, but it's still too rough for my small block no ac car.

Unrelated but nice to see another "pewter AG" car. Got one and love it!

Good luck finding liners, I've read that repro's are not great. If you find a source for good ones please post. Will be rebuilding my spring soon.

Thanks Tom

Youre the second person that's commented on repo quality.
I've seen so many rebuilt, I never thought it was an issue.
Appreciate the info,
Chris

I didn't pay close enough attention to your post. Sorry. Good luck with your search. David

Default Hi,

You know, I have looked at the way the springs are made. I get the strong strong feeling that the liners were sprayed with a graphite type spray or the gray paint had some type of quality to it that acted as a lubricant. If other could comment that would be great. I know of a graphite spray that actually goes on like paint. I would like to try it sometime. Similar stuff was used in smog pumps.... hard to believe but true. Totally different subject.

Default Hi

Check out QUANTA corvette products. I seem to recall they mentioned something about there spring liners being made correctly. They also might sell a special paint for the spring. I know people used to mention the use of a special gray paint. Had a weird name. People can correct me on this. Been a while since I looked into it.

Hi,
I believe the original paint used on the rear spring leaves was a 'zinc rich' primer from the 'Ionoklad' paint family made by United Chemical.

The zinc in the paint added some 'lubricity' to it's surface.

Here's a small sample of the color from the label of a can of the actual paint used.
Below it are samples of 3 rear spring spring paints from various vendors.
Regards,
Alan

Default Hey

That sound about right.

I think you can take the old liners and move them back to a smaller spring and cut them shorter. That should allow a person to keep some of the springs liners original.

I once saw an original set of spring liners with GM labels. That was only once. I could use a set too but hard to find. I think Quanta might have good one's and I believe they sell the correct paint.

Thanks for all the great info and replies.
For now the spring is going back on the way it is.
I know what to do if I decide to rebuild again.

Default Ionoklad

It is quite possible the paint varied in tint from the manufacture. I looked up the Ionoklad paint name. It is described as a zinc rich formula that resisted corrosion. Im not sure if it was intended to have any lubricity to it. It might have unintentionally had lubricity. Seems it was sold to a good majority of the auto industry in the US. I believe I have a spring with the majority of its Ionoklad gray paint on it. But the last spring liner is worn through on the ends. I've taken a handful of those springs apart and they all seem to wear through the ends to some degree.

Thanks for the info on the Ionoklad!

I would consider using this stuff on the inside of the springs before assembly:

Amazon Amazon
