WTB: 4 Hole Luggage Rack

4 Hole Luggage Rack
I'm back on the site after a number of months. I'm looking for a 4 hole luggage rack for my 70. Yes, I know MOST luggage racks were 6 hole or 8 hole, but there was a 4 hole. I am told it is a V54. The 4 holes are 14 1/2" high and 40 1/4" wide, center to center.

RPO V54 was first listed as an option in 1977. For 1977 it was a 8 hole mounted rack
RPO V54 was then listed as a roof panel carrier for 1978-1982 Model Years and looks like this:
I have never heard of any GM 4 hole luggage rack. Aftermarket I would believe existed...but would need to see proof that GM ever put a 4 hole rack on any C3.

As I surt the internet, I continue to learn new things about our old cars. Some of the info is right and some of it is wrong. Indeed, the V54 is a later part than my 70 Stingray, so I was off base. Yet, I am reading where several cars had the four hole rack. One person said it was probably an older rack, from a pre-68 car that was added later. I do know this. I'm not the only one with the issue. I see there was a four hole rack on Ebay up until early May, so they are out there. For sure, I have four holes in my car that I'm about to paint, so I'm trying to figure out what to do before paint is applied.

My 1980 Corvette has the V54 option. There are four holes with bolts in the rear. I also, with no success, have been looking for a carrier. For the longest time I thought the bolt holes were for a spoiler or something.
Found out what they were for here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...to-1982-a.html

Caskiguy, your rack is exactly what I'm talking about. I can tell that the holes in my deck match up to yours. I wonder if it was a factory rack or from another source? I have heard about the 4 hole racks, but yours is the best picture I've seen. Now, it's a matter of keeping on looking til I find one..

Have you thought about making your own ( have some machine shop design/weld ) out of Aluminum or Stainless ? Pretty simple layout really, not a lot of cost involved material wise. I may do exactly that as I rebuild my 70'.
I'll keep a look out for you and send what I find.
Good Luck

Thanks for the Craigslist ad. He is in California, so I am going to be real careful. There are a lot of scams out there. I texted him and he wants "green cash American dollars." Now, he texts back with some kind of garbage. I will call him later... but I smell scam.

I had a 4 hole on a 74 in the Eighties. It was a tilt up rack had knurled ***** you undid and could tilt the rack up I assumed to fill the tank. I took it off and left it at my parents house never to be seen again.

Check this Craigslist ad out? Anyone in California who knows about this one? Here it is: https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/...560145545.html. As we all are, I'm greatly aware of many scams. How do I verify this is a real deal?

If you have no luck locating a four hole rack, I have heard that there are racks now in the after market that have "no" holes pre-drilled so you can measure and drill the holes you need, where you need them. I cannot remember the source, sorry, but Willcox Corvette might know if this can be obtained and where to get it.
Just a thought, takes away the guess work of matching the holes.
Good luck with your search.

Here's a photo of a page from my '70 Accessories' brochure … so the 4-hole rack must have been available then … as a Dealer installed option from what I understand.

IT IS TRUE! I've received a boat load of guff from a lot of Vette guys about this. Everything I've read has been telling me the 4 hole rack was a 'factory option' and not a piece of junk from another car. Live an learn! Thanks much!

Not a factory option! But available by GM from your Chevrolet dealer. There is a difference. That brochure shows you what you could get through your dealer. A rack was never a factory option in the 70-72 era.

Friend, you are splitting hairs, for sure, and besides I don't think you are on target. Some items may not have been installed at the factory location, but they were considered factory options. Some options were only available at the dealer, but they were still considered factory options. They just were installed at another location. I know this to be true as I bought my first car in 1972, brand new off the lot, a Mercury Comet GT. The dealer installed some options that only he could install, but Ford considered them factory options as they gave the dealer permission to install them. The same is true of Corvettes, as I understand it, anyway. Not only this, the bank considered them factory options and included them in the financing, too. Yet, I still have a lot to learn as I did on this 4 hole rack.

Well son of a gun, I just learned something new again...that's why I love this forum!
70Yellowbird gave us just what we needed to see to show us all that a 4 hole rack could indeed be purchased from the dealer for the early C3's.
Rev Ron I wish you all the best in landing one, and hope you have success in making a deal work with that CL seller out west.
All the best to you!
Dave
