69 zl1 engine for sale
I have owned this ZL1 engine for 30 something years. I sold the car I was going to use it in and it has been sitting ever since. it is a real deal 1969 dated parts except the carb is a service replacement piece. when I purchased it I had a friend who worked for American airlines as a mechanic and he took it and had all the pieces checked out for any cracks or problems. it all checked out good.
asking $20,000.00
asking $20,000.00

How many ZL1 engines were built in cars in 1969? Good luck with your sale.

I think your asking price is a great starting point for negotiations with a buyer. There are a finite number of these engines out there and it looks like you have a complete one ready to be rebuilt. I would be curious why it was taken apart to begin with though.
That said, GLWS!

Reportedly 3 Corvettes. I'm not familiar with the amount of Camaros with them built. This is most likely an over the counter crate engine.

They made 2 Corvette ZL1 cars according to GM records. The yellow coupe is a real car with the original motor. The Orange convertible is considered an original ZL1 car by some and others don't belive it is authentic. It is an automatic car that has been said to have paperwork from the original owner. The white car with the black skunk stripe is not an original ZL1 car. It was ordered as an L88 and retrofitted with a ZL1 engine to run on the track. You have a cool piece of racing history and most likely the engine was probably dropped into a camaro or corvette to run on the strip and light up the tires!

Melting Slicks
Guys this is one of the reasons I'm on this forum.
I have seen the two original ZL-1's and their attendant prices...and price again, and again.
I'm kinda gob-smacked here....!!!!
$20,000 seems like a bit of a bargain.
I hate when advertisers use the word 'unicorn' for what is basically a 'mule'......this IS actually a unicorn.
Very best luck on the sale and to the new owner. (that'll be a thread!)
{I'm still kicking myself when my neighbor offered me a TRACO 383 dynoed longblock in the crate for $2500...and I passed. Twas 1982....so that's probably what that self same engine would go for today...$20k.}
cool beans

You are one lucky guy to own that for sure. If I only had the cash....
My older brother had one of these around 74-75-ish. Bought it from a local guy who had it in a 69 Camaro, bought over the counter in pieces.
He was told it was a Zl1, also known as a L-88 3rd design - which I don't know if true or not for the 3rd design. Not sure what he paid - would
never say, but sure it was a lot at that time. He put it in his 68 Chevelle, and what a beast! Carburetion was just a dual plane high rise, 850 dbl pumper,
the 620 lift solid cam....m21 4 spd, 12 bolt 4.88's street and strip. He could hit the gas at 55 and break the tires loose easily (N50's) Took it to the strip,
and with 12" slicks turned 10.96@ 130! He was beating guys with tunnel rams and 2 - 4's. They were pissed! All came over to the pits and asked what the
hell kind of motor is that? I still have it on video of him beating a Dart 383 tunnel 2x4's, and a GTO 389 tunnel ram 2x4's, along with some others.
It's on youtube and they came from VHS, grainy, but you can make them out ok, can post links if anyone interested, but no pics of the engine so you can't
tell what he's running, but you can see the stock hood on the 68 427 Chevelle. After a few years he sold it to a friend who street raced it around Syracuse, N.Y.
Then that guy passed away 3-4 years later and it was sold, not sure where or whatever happened to it. I heard Rochester, but don't know.
$20K for yours is a steal IMO, this is one special engine - and I don't know the owner, not trying to sell it for him - just affirming what it is for those who don't know.
If I had it, I'd never sell it.

I agree the price is fair. I have a real ZL1 counter exchange engine that I will be putting up for sale and was going to ask the same money for it. I also have a ZL1 can am and yenko application tall deck block for sale on this forum for $8000 and think that is reasonable. These are hard to find and if you don't have a real one which is worth a lot of money and probably will never see the open road a recreation with a real block is the next best thing. I have personally never seen one of these engines on the street in my life and I planned on building that counter exchange motor and dropping in a real big block 1969 Camaro but lost my job and now have to relocate to bowling green Kentucky to build that sweet corvette. I wish you good luck with your sale and think it is a great investment for someone and increases the value of any correct application you choose to put it in.
