Re: F/S - Used 1980-82 Rear end housing with 3.08 gears (82Vette'ster)
It is what some call a "center section" or "pumpkin". The housing that holds the pinion and rear gear. Complete with pinion, ring gear, posi unit, and side "stub" axles. All are in "good" shape, but I would probably put newer stub axles in and look at getting the posi clutch packs replaced before going through the trouble of installing it in the car for good.
everything works fine, just needs typical maintenance.

Re: F/S - Used 1980-82 Rear end housing with 3.08 gears (BSeery)
I hope you can help, I want to change my rear end on my 1979 L48 and am looking for the complete "pumpkin" (at least that is what a friend told me!!!)
I want to change the 3.08 to 3.70 or 3.73 and I don't know where to begin...any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: F/S - Used 1980-82 Rear end housing with 3.08 gears (Subtle98)
For a 1979 you can either look around for a used unit (Here, eBay, or other places) and try and get one with the right gears.
You could also contact Tom's Differentials, Mid America, Zips and a few other companies. They usually sell the "pumpkin" (gear case with pinion, ring gear, posi trac unit) and take your old one in on exchange.
Unless you have a 5 speed manual, a automatic with over drive or don't plan on doing much highway driving I would not step up to 3.73's.
