i am entertaining the idea of building a cold air box for my 79...
the original cold air induction was scrapped when i modded my engine bay from stock to "early hot rod"...(bare essentials and color)
i am thinking along the lines of something like Oliver (GrandsportC3)
started...kinda like the NASCAR cup cars use...that induct air from up by the windshield although i wouldnt oppose induction from the front but i think that would be harder to make look good and also take up more engine bay space...
have any of you thought about this too...any ideas???
I like the idea and was comtemplating the same issue. Making a cardboard template and then take it to someone who could weld up one for me. But I don't believe it can be done with a stock hood. I like the Edelbrock Air GAP but don;t like the idea of choking off the carb with a radical drop base air cleaner for two reasons, 1. Sucking in hot air and 2. having the top of the air cleaner so close to the top of the carb. No offense to the peeps that did this, but I wish someone would post some tech data on running a drop base cleaner vs. a non-drop base open element to see if the drop base would offset the gains of the RPM manifold.
im gonna be doing the same thing as you soon on my 73. i am going to try to retrofit the stock air cleaner assenbly with the rubber gasket to my 670 holly street advenger, the stock air cleaner wont fit on a holly without modifaciation to the air cleaner base-the only parts ill need is the rubber gasket. i just got the cowl door operating last fall. now it opens and closes with the gas pedal,(had to buy the wiring loom that goes to the jack by the headlights) i plan on driving the car with the cowl induction and showing it with the chrome air cleaner set up like yours,,,, keep us posted on your progress!--also im not sure if the deck height is different with a stock intake manifold & stock carb,, vs-the elderbrock and 670 holly--

Signguy,
I have a 70 with the dual snorkel setup. It is just begging to get some hoses fitted and then run down to either side of the radiator. I need to put a hole in the radiator support for each side. This will give me cold-air induction. If you have a narrow radiator then the cold air source could be either side of the radiator.
I think you can use the dual snorkels on later model cars if they have QJETS. If nothing else it would give you a starting piece to cut/mod to add your plumbing for the cold air to come in.
You could also check out a junkyard for different air cleaner tops and peice together something. Once you get it right just get it powdercoated and slap on a "keep it all GM" decal and no-one will ever know....
Why not just put an L-88 air cleaner box under the hood and duct it from the windshield like you want? Eckler's sells the box that can be 'glassed in to the hood.
I went with an entire L-88 hood, airbox and filter setup on my small block. I have to use 2 inches of spacers to take up all of the extra room so I would expect that it should fit under a stock height hood without problems.

- im having a hard time finding this L-88 air box in the ecklers catalog, if you can please post a pic,,,,,,thanks
I like the L88 hood idea as well. By the way, not directly relevant here but it should get your idea file going...latest Corvette Fever shows the Keisler car (I think it's a '65) with some sort of custom-made cold-air box on it to work with the 350 Ram Jet engine. It's the custom box that is of interest here... Wish they had published better photos of that part of the project... Maybe the Keisler guys will see this thread and give us some...
hi gary, yes link ,,,,for a L-88 air dam that goes under the hood and gets bonded to the under hood to get air from the coul door a ecklers item 100.00- im trying to figure what the next step(piece) just shows a air dam for a l 88 hood- problem here is we dont know what parts you used so we dont know what to look for-its not in any books i have for my 73----you say its in the feb issue of corvette fever??? i got the issue in frt of me(march)
this project is probably going to the back burner for a few days anyways as i may be picking up my C5 today if i choose to buy it...
its a pewter colored 2000...
im sure if i do, it will take my attention away from the C3 this weekend...
but im still doing this project...and still interested in this thread...
thanx...i may or may not buy it...if i do, it will be today tho...
gotta decide if i want the additional payment...
BTW...i didnt mean to highjack my own thread!
but i just saw (and drove) this car yesterday and im in love...
its kinda taken over my vette thoughts since then if you know what i mean...
the pewter IS nice...i dont like the silver at all but i DO like that pewter...
When I install a new bronze pilot bushing do I need to lube it. If so oil, grease, I seem to remomber hearing soaking it in oil overnight? Any ideas, thanks..

sorry garry , i realy thought you were on at the time and didnt chime in and we sorta kinda one thing led to another and ,,,,,,didi ever tell you how nice of a job you have done to your car so far!!
Here's a pic of my cold air setup that Signguy is talking about. I tested it with a temperature sensor that was routed into the air cleaner. The intake air temperature dropped basically to the outside temperature. In slow traffic, the difference was 30 degrees and in highway traffic 15 degrees...
That's easy HP..
This assembly is built from lightweight wood and didn't add more than 1 - 2 lbs..
