I intalled some header wrap on my rear exhaust pipes to keep my VBP composite spring cool and it works great! Took her out for a beat run and checked the heat coming off the pipes, the wrapped part was cool enough to touch as soon as I got back into the garage but the pipes right next to the wrap was hot as hell. I couldnt even touch them a little. Good stuff.
I am seriously contemplating wrapping the entire exhaust sysytem of SHARK81. This is my rational, please chime in and let me know what you think.
1. This should eliminate most of the cabin heat
Well, it should help out a little bit. You'll still want to check for leakage through the dash and floorboards at the usual locations. Radiant heat can be a bizznitch, too. Maybe some nice reflective matting?
2. This should increase performance
The underhood air your engine is sucking in will be quite cooler. I wouldn't really expect any dramatic SOTP gains, though.
Another "benefit" of the header wrap is that it will tend to quiet your headers a little bit. Hard to explain, but you know how headers sound, right? The underhood noise? Well, the wrap will muffle that sound somewhat and make it sound, uh...more solid or less clangybangy under there. (Hope that makes sense.)
I wrapped the headers on my original 350, and it quitend it down alot during idle and cruise. Kept it very cool under the hood, but it just wasn't appealing to the eye.
I am a big fan of wrapped headers. I believe that no other method is better at isolatiing heat. Even after a hour on the expressways the headers still don't give off the heat wave when you open the hood at cruise nights. Mine have been wrapped for more then 10 years, the wrap is getting ratty but the headers are still good.
wrapped stainless...never a problem, only thing to worry about is that the wrap doesn't get soaked w/ oil and turns into a fuse. Use some silicone spray on it to keep oil from getting in.

Good point. I used the high temp paint that was recommended by the company that makes the wrap. It seals the wrap and makes it look ok since mine can bee seen from behind.
