It slides in, but be sure to have the "flap" on the seal facing the proper way. Instructions should be included with the seal. The upper portion of the two piece seal can be removed by pushing on one end with a small screwdriver, then grabbing the opposite protruding end with pliers and pulling. A small plastic "shoehorn" should be included with the new seal also. Use that to protect the new seal from the sharp edge during install. For install....just slide er in!!!

What is this "oil sealing compound?" I always just slapped it all back together without any special sealing compound or hammering the crank back and forth...is this all necessary? I am getting ready to the same work to my vette and want to make sure I do it right.

Thanks.

I don't know whether or not this helps or hurts, but I have read to leave the seal sticking out on one end. This leaves the ends up inside the caps makes it harder for the oil to leak by.

If anyone has tried this and it works please chime in. I learned about it after the fact when I was rebuilding mine.
