Default Wrong bolt size for rear spring?

Based on the advice of a recent post, I went ahead and purchased (locally) two 8" x 9/16" Grade 8 bolts in order to lower my rear-end.

Crawling underneath today, I noticed the original bolts (appx. 6") are MUCH thinner...either 1/2" or 7/16". Now I suspect the person offering the advice doesn't know how to measure bolts and thought that 9/16" was the size of the wrench used...(I believe which would make the bolt 1/2").

So...what is the REAL size of the rear sping bolts?

Note to backyard mechanics: Bolts are measured by the size of their shaft & threads, not the size of their head or the size wrench used

I think the "factory bolts" are cut down in the middle and they are in reality a 9/16 bolt....i run 5/8 bolts on my racer.

PS: a 3/8 bolt takes a 9/16 wrench...

Default Just changed mine

I just removed 2 9/16 x 6 bolts and replaced them with 2 9/16 x 8 bolts.
The bolt head is 13/16" and the nut is 7/8".
It dont get any simpler than that
Maybe yours has been bubba'd

That describes the new bolts I have. But the factory(?) bolts are definitely thinner.

Why don't I crawl underneath and measure? Because I'll still need to know the correct size bolt.

Well then you have your measurement. The factory bolt plus a couple inches more length. Ya know Ecklers sells the bolt you're looking for. Ya don't gotta measure anything. Here is the link.

Ding, ding ding! We have a winner. Climbed underneath and measured the bolts. While the shaft is 1/2", the threaded part is 9/16". Apparently the bolts have been "necked down" from the factory.

Go figure...

I checked with VB&P. The bushings for their extended bolts measure 9/16".
