No, I think it's a nice compromise between a radical cam and a mild chop. The 280 w/ have a nice lope and sound yet you'll be able to drive it everyday and still have power all throughout a the power band.
If you're running an auto you'll probably need a stall.

I'd certainly guess that he is referring to advertised duration.
My cam is a Comp Cams 12-212-2 (i.e. CompCams 280H) It is much milder than I thought it would be in my 388 stroker engine.
Here's some of my specs.:
388 w/10.5:1 compression.
64cc Trick flow 23* aluminum heads.
1.6:1 roller tipped rockers.
Edelbrock Performer intake. Edelbrock #1904 Q-Jet carb.
Headman headers.
Dual 2-1/4" exhaust.
Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 mufflers.
Modified 700R4 transmission w/2400 stall converter. (O.E. transmission was TH350C)
Rebuilt DANA 44 w/3.73:1 (O.E. ratio was 3.07:1)

I think the 292H cam in my Z28 is 292* over-all, while 'just' 244* at .050" lift, and .501" valve-lift with 1.5-ratio rocker-arms.....
but that .550" lift DOES make me think it IS 280* at .050" lift, unless it is a fairly-radical roller grind, correct?

:confusesd:
Good point!
IF it is 280 @ .050. . . . he probably won't be happy with it.
yellow73sb, reply back with the complete specs when you get the chance.

The cam card shows it as 230 at .050". That's not a huge cam - it will run just fine with a good intake and exhaust. 280 is advertised.

yeah, but that's not his cam card...
he said his lift was .550
double check to be sure. 280 advertised duration will be fine, but if it's more than 245deg at .050" lift, it will be a dog on the street. too much overlap.

hey yellow73sb
Need to know a few other things as well...
Are you running a auto or manual?
what gear in the rear??
If auto you better be running a stall converter?
With a 550 lift on a regular hyd cam... THAT IS A BIG CAM ! you are going to be very very bad on vacuum. SO your power brakes and headlights and all your power (vacuum operated accessories will suffer) unless you get a vacuum cansistar.
I ran a 246/256 duration solid roller with 610in 617ex it was very mean and choppy... ran good. vacuum could be a problem from time to time with the power brakes. Other time no problem... I ran a 3500 stall and double pumper holley wit 4.11 gears. Compression 10.5 with a iron headed 350 4 bolt. ran high 12 on muscle in camaro... mid 11s on the 175 shot. FUN FUN....
Drivability was.... augh
