I have a 1974 convertible and just got it back from the shop after spending over $600 to install my rebuilt compressor & VIR valve and charge it with R12. Now, only a small amount of cool air blows from the center vent and will not blow out very strong, even though blower motor was replaced a few years ago. I do not hear any dash vent doors opening or closing when I move the dash control thumbwheel.
Any help as to what I can do to check it out & get it working would be greatly appreciated since I have spent so much $ already + parts. I really need to have working A/C as it has never worked since I have owned this car.
Sounds like a vacuum leak. When the shop was working on your car they may have accidently disconnected a vaccum line which operates your vent doors. I have seen this happen a few times on other cars. I'm not familiar with a 74 so I can't tell you where to look. But I would pop the hood and begin looking at all vaccum to make sure they are connected.
There are a few places to check. Usually the vaccuum for the ac system tees off the headlight circuit, check there first, on my 77 it is near the brake booster. If that checks out, pull the console shift plate and check the lines under there for tears or kinks, and if that checks out, check all the actuators behind the dash. You're problem is in one of these areas in my opinion.
After opening my dash and getting into the main A/C duct, I found the plenum flap/door that opens the cold air flow and sends cold air through to the vents. However, above the main duct that has the flap in it, there are two controls. The one to the right has a cable going to it that moves when I move the Hot/Cold thumbwheel. Then there is another control to the left of that one, which when I push the lever to the left it opens the flap to let cold air flow. Also, when I push the flap open for cold air, I hear a vaccum leak. I temporarily stuck a socket in the left side control to keep the falp jammed open. Does anyone have a large diagram of bothe of these controls & their connections to cables & vaccum lines??????
PS: the flap/door has a plastic hinge like piece on it with a cotter pin going through the middle. It seems that this should attach to something to probably move the door open & close.
Thanks again for any help or large diagram pics you can send me!!!
