Default Replacing Exhaust manifold

Found out recently I have the wrong manifold on the right side. Bought the correct replacement and ready to swap them. My vette books all say the 350 sb has no gasket between the manifold and block. When I removed the old one there was a gasket (metal). Is it ok to NOT use a gasket when I reassemble or is it better to use one? Metal or something else?

Also one of the studs on the new manifold looks pretty worn. I have a replacement. What is the best way to remove the old stud?

Thanks
Neil

I used fel pro exhaust manifold gaskets on my manifolds, shiny side towards the engine, and they work great. I highly suggest it. No permatex needed.

The best way that I've found to remove studs, is the old double nut. Thread one nut onto the stud, then thread a second nut on top of first nut. Then use an open end wrench on first nut and try to thread it off. It will tighten against the second nut, which wont thread off, and force the stud out of the manifold. I would also use some PB blaster or other penetrating oil on the stud/manifold threads, as this will make the removal easier.

Good luck, it isn't very hard at all, I put the job in at less then 2 hours, and 3 beers.

I don't use any gaskets on my exhaust. Between the head and the manifold/extractors/headers I use silicone, just the clear stuff. never have any leaks. It works.
New manifold with worn stud? You probably mean correct second hand manifold, right? This would be one of the studs to connect the rest of the exhaust to the manifold. I was trying to think where the stud would be on the top section of the manifold and then it hit me

Clear silicone? Do you know what temp that stuff is rated for? You may not have leaks but I don't think that's why.

Be very carfull with that stud. The cast iron manifold is brittle and thin near the threads.

Silicone?

Use the fel-pro gaskets. They work.

Like I said, It works.
I have removed headers after several years use and the silicone is still there.
