Default what should belt slack be?

i want to know how much slack you should have on belts since it might be the culprit to a noise ive been hearing.

V-belts right? well they have these belt tension checker things, but they don't make them anymore so they're hard to find.

general rule of thumb... when the belt is tight, press down in the middle and it should give about 1/2" or so.
