Default Vacuum Fitting on Thermostat Housing??

I would like to get a new radiator hose in the near future, and got a "while I'm at it", would like to change the thermostat housing since it does not look too great, maybe get a new shiny chrome one. My question is, do I need to have this vacuum fitting on the new one, what does it do, and if I remove it how do I plug the vacuum port on the carb.
Thanks In Advance,
David

It's a temperature-controlled vacuum switch. It prevents vacuum from being applied to the distributor vacuum advance prior to engine warm-up. This lowers emissions and makes the engine warm up quicker due to the resultant retarded timing. You can hook up your distributor vacuum advance directly to a manifold vacuum source on your carb and eliminate the switch if emissions testing is not a concern in your area.

Jeg's has the goose neck crome with the hole in the top for the senser. Or, you could get a crome goose neck and vacuum plugs for the carb at your local parts store. You can also do the Bubba fix. Just cut off a peace of hose and push in a bolt in to close the hole

Here in Wisconsin when they do the emissions testing on my car it constitutes a run on the rollers with a sniffer in the tailpipe. Oh yeah, and the car is already warmed up.
From the looks of things yours isn't hooked up to anything now, so....
Put the chrome one on and end the argument.
