Default Iron heads and boost

So, here I am thinking about iron heads again.

when every dollar is an uphill battle, I really want this turbo project to get underway. I can get iron heads for signifigantly less than aluminum heads.

I really want to run 16 psi on a 8.25 compression ratio with 64cc chambers and some speed pro dished pistons.

I already have my cam. 213/219 with I believe a 112 LSA, LPE L98 roller cam(it was a hundred bucks).

I can get something in iron that flows well in the sub .500 lift catagory pretty cheap.

Its a biannual thought.

I ran iron heads and 12 pounds of boost without a problem. I am switching to aluminum now but not because of a problem with detonation. Head for head a iron one will make more power then an aluminum one.
My 12 pounds of boost came in at a much lower rpm then you could get with a turbo. 12 pounds of boost with 8 to 1 compress gave me 14.5 compression at that boost and I could get it by 1500 rpm. This is really hard on the motor, no rpm and lots of compression.
With the turbo your rpm would be up and it could handle the increased booth better.

Vortecs are a possibility but I would have to pay extra to cover the .47 lift in my camshaft.

The kidney shaped chamber is definitely a must.

I was thinking something along the lines of some dart platinum series iron eagles or something. Vortecs will work too, but I am not sure how much I save when I buy the modified ones.

I have some cheap chinese shaft rockers for 23 degree heads. Not to sure how well they will work with vortec heads.

Depends are they centerbolt or perimeter bolt?

they are center bolt. Dang it.

The large port vortecs are perimeter bolt. So they might work on them, but for the prices of Iron aluminum becomes an option.

I not sure, but don't roller cams require different valve springs than hyd flat tappet?

The Iron Eagle Platinums look like a really good head. Dart makes good heads, if it were me I would be leaning in that direction.

Concerning the roller cam, hydraulic roller will usually need 110-130lbs on seat, and 280-330lbs open. Have you considered the bee-hive type spring Comp sells?

Decide on the cam last, call the tech departments at a few diff cam companies to get their recomendation on cam specs for your final set up, this will ensure you get the best bang for you buck, blower cams usually have less lift and diff event timings then a NA eng

I bought the LPE L98 cam, 213/219 with 112 LSA

Crane recommended their 214/222 cam with 112 LSA

Compcams recommended 218/224 with 112 LSA

Cam motion called for 214/214 with 114 LSA

If you need GOOD iron heads I have a set. Double hump heads I had the valves opened up to 2.05s. Very nice heads and willing to sell for a good price if you need them. Make me an offer.

Do you know if the bowtie vortec heads will accept pre-87 valvetrain components(like my shaft rockers).....

They have perimeter bolt valve cover holes. I just dont know about their geometry.

64cc, mild bowl work to help flow better with the larger valve
