Very nice job, and, now that I can't figure out how to post a reply with the quote, but regarding gel-coat...applying it to the mold is how factory glass is done. In the days before epoxy-based primer-surfacers, you would normally spray on a gel-coat to seal the fiberglass hairs and keep them from rising through the primer and making it impossible to paint the car. You can still buy sprayable gel-coat and it is still used. It's just that with today's advanced coatings, it's not as common.

That car looks excellent.
For my own information, did you get many dust specks on the paint ?

Welcome to the brotherhood of Red Vettes !!

What color was it before ? Besides primer gray.
Also, where did you get the aftermarket body work? Is that the package from Ecklers ?
I saw their package and it had an extra piece for the front end that I don't see on your car.
If it is there, can you post a better picture of the front? More "head on" then "from above".

I think a lot of us are jeaous, can you give us more details?

1) What is Glassurit Single Stage Urethane?
2) How many coats?
3) Is there a clear coat on it?

I don't know squat about paint but some day would like to tackle the project.

No I didnt gell coat the car, with todays epoxy primers and primer fillers there is no reason to gelcoat fiberglass.

MotorHead
Yes I had some dust, bugs and runs but these were all easily wet sanded and buffed out

Vetteboy
As much as I enjoyed painting my own car (and yes I would do it again) you couldnt pay me enough.

I will be joining soon

Glassurit is paint Mfg. by BASF

Sweet! I really want to get going on mine. Can you give me the technical info such as what kind of guns you used and the compressor. Friend of mine told me it was really hard compared to when they used laquer. Any info and details would be awesome.......it looks really great.

Actually, Blues, spraying urethane is not substantially harder than working with laquer. You have to pay careful attention to the mixing ratios with urethane, but it's certainly not outside the scope of an amature painter and the results can be quite spectacular. A big plus (beyond the durability) of spraying in urethane is that it is easy to sand out imperfections...about the same as laquer.

I painted both my 'Vette (in laquer) and my Fairlane (urethane) in my garage. You should give it a try.

Very nice job!

Do you have an idea of how much time you spent for prep and how much for actually shootinng the car?

Did you ventillate the garage somehow?
