Default 1980 Vette with 800 miles

Hey guys,
I don't get to visit this section very often. Since I currently have a '98 and a '64, spend most of my time over there. I have owned a '69 in the past. Anyway, I have a neighbor who has a yellow '80 with only 800 miles on it and is "as new". He hasn't shown any indication of wanting to sell it, but I thought I'd better let him know I'm seriously interested in his car before one day I see it being loaded on a trailer of a new owner. I know a local vintage vette dealer has been trying to buy it. Anyone have a good idea what I should be considering offering him for this vette? Thanks for your help.

Are you sure it 800 miles and not 100800 miles because the odometer flips
at 99999.
If it has only 800 miles on it then it's worth quite a bit, I'm sure there are people here that can give you a very good idea as to it's value. I myself would be very inerested in this car and it's value.

Also if it has only 800 miles it was probably bought as an investment and
the owner will have a good idea how much it's worth.

MotorHead,
Yep, it's only 800 miles and it is new. I don't think he knows what it's worth in actual dollars but he knows that it would bring top dollar. I say that because I don't think he has really tried to find out what it's worth. I'm not looking to get the car for a song and a dance, but also don't want to pay too much either,if he would consider selling. A low ball offer on my part, intentional or not, would most likely insult him and that's the last thing I want to do.
Anyone else have any ideas on the value of this rare find.

While 800 miles is outstanding. It should'nt be worth too much more than a fully restored example with higher miles. That should give you a good gauge.

I would add about 10 to 15% to a fully retored example's price.

Nothing too special or rare about an 80 to warrant any more.

Before you jump out with an offer, consider what exactly you want to do with the car. If you want a trailer/garage queen to take to shows, an offer of several thousand over an excellent car higher milege. If you want a weekend cruiser, then I would back down on my offer. If you begin to drive the 80 with any regularity, you can count on deterioration from lack of use to take its toll on your checkbook. I would bet on having to totally going through the brakes because the calipers will begin to leak down shortly. Any and all rubber hoses and gaskets will be subject to leaks due to being dry rotted and/or brittle. This includes radiator and heater hoses, all rubber brake lines, fuel lines, valve cover gaskets, transmission seals, main seals, and pinion seals on the rear. I am not trying to scare you off the car, but just want you to be aware of all the possiblities because "been there, done that".

Before I bought my 1980, I had a yellow 1981 that I bought with only 21000mi. I agree with a previous post, you can count on all the seals and gaskets being dried out, and although everything is practically new, the car will soon leak like you can't imagine. Unfortunate news, but true.

MY question is "WHY" does it only have 800 miles on it? That is an almost unheard of low mileage car.

Wish I could afford to buy a new car and drive it a total of 800 miles over the next 21 years. :seeya

This car would be great - with 800 miles it could have the original (now grotesquely flatspotted) tires, the original (incredibly foul) motor oil, and a whole passle of original (now dried out) gaskets, o-rings, hoses.

I think you would be amazed how much money would have to be spent to make this car drivable.

Last year one of the 'vette magazines had a story on a car of similar vintage that was kept parked in someone's driveway for 20 years. They had kept it covered with a car cover. In fact I think there were 7 car covers on it, every time one would start to get ragged-out the guy would just put another over it. I think this was in California and was owned by some goofy lawyer.
Surprisingly enough when they finally hauled off to a Chevy dealer for a check out, the only thing they found wrong with it was a little mold under the hood. Apparently they changed the fluids washed it, cleaned the interior, put a new battery in it and it started right up with no problems.
Now my story, I bought a pickup 19 years old with 2300 miles on it. It was a pickup used by the emergeny response team on my plant site. It was weathered very bad, had some rust, but the oil had been changed 2 times each year, and it was serviced regularly since it was supposed to be ready in a minute to drag a trailer with emergency gear, so it ran great. The only thing is that it had never been driven faster than 25 miles an hour.
I bought it, washed, compounded it, fixed the few rust spots and drove it. In the first week I had it I had to replace the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and belts.
I sold it, no one believed it only had 3300 ( put another 1000 miles driving it for 2 months)miles on it when I tried to sell it, they all assumed it had rolled over. I eventually sold it for just about what a 20 year old pickup with 100,000+ miles would have on it.
