Default Rear ratio and Muncie question

If I'm running a 69BB at 2800RPM at 70MPH with an M20;what rear do I have?

It may be a 3.08 but I would think 3.36 instead.

Also, is there a way to convert an M20 to an M21 or M22, or does it really matter? Can the M20 take the punishment of hard driving with high HP/torque engines? But, of course I would never do that! :bs

for ratios check this out. I would guess a 3.36 if the tires are 27"
Nice vette.
How do you like the chambered exhaust??

Sure, Replace All of the main drive gears, countergear, reverse idler gears and reverse gear. Take the casting of your case and change the A at the end of the identifier to a C (will need some talent to do that because it's casted on there), whammo, Instant M22 and all of the gear noise that comes with it :D

It would be cheaper to buy a Richmond 6 speed.

Yooperod - I absolutely love the sound of the chambered pipes but I want the Hooker sidepipes if they sound as good or better because they look awesome and baffles are now available that make them less restrictive than the chambered systems. If you want undercar exhaust, there's nothing better than the way they sound with headers! :D :yesnod:

Don't be too quick to trade your M20 off. It's true that the M22 is stronger, and if you can find one for a good deal, then buy it. However, as long as you don't do a lot of speed shifting, your M20 probably will only need a simple rebuild to replace worn parts.

The M20 gear ratios make a tall rear end feel a lot shorter in the first 2 gears.
First gear in an M20 is 2.42 versus 2.20 for an M21 or M22.
Second gear in an M20 is 1.88 versus 1.60 for an M21 or M22.
What this means is simply that an M20 on a 3.36 is roughly equal to an M22 Rock Crusher on 3.90 gears in first and second.
(Third and fourth are the same, so you go back to your 3.36).

So the Wide Ratio Muncie will launch like a 3.90 racing gear but still give you a long legged 3rd and a hellacious top end. It's like having a Rock Crusher with an overdrive.

As far as the mufflers go, it's hard to beat the sound of a pair of Flowmasters emptying out the back! Once you hear a good Flowmaster dual exhaust, you might scrap your plans for sidepipes. Besides, sidepipes don't allow you an exhaust crossover, which can net you in the neighborhood of an extra 15 or 20 horsepower.

So what is the ideal rear gear for the M20.
I have the 3.08 but have considered changing to
the 3.70 or somewhere in between.

I only have experience with a M20 with 3:36 and I find it the right set up for me. I'm not into dragging my car but doing nice roadtrips. The 3:36 I find is a great all around gear with the M20.
