What's a good temp?
My vette is running a little hot at 190F. Are any of you running 160F thermostats? What are the effects of running this as opposed to a 180F thermostat? :smash:

Where did you get the idea that 190 degrees was hot? The thermostats range from 195/180/160.These cars were designed to run at 190-195-200.If you want to run a cooler thermostat for a little more power try it.I would not worry until I saw temps over 215 degrees and rising.Buy the way,I ran a 160 degree thermo and had problems fouling plugs while driving around in town, also my heater would not work if I got out on the highway. It did seem to pull a little more torque down low though.I am running a dirty cam(lots of duration)and with the low thermo(160) the car at idle really stank(emissions).Running a higher thermo(195) has helped out the idle emissions.

I thought by cooling the engine down just a bit I could gain a little more torque. :chevy I was worried that the cooler running engine might cause the oil to thicken up a bit and be harder on the engine. But I have heard that every 10 degree drop in intake temp offers a 1% increase in horsepower. I figure if you lower the engine temp that would also make the bigger gap in the intake temp. Am I on to something or being stupid?

Ran a 160 in my crate motored '81 for awhile, but it never worked well. Too many thermo-switches on emissions gear, plust the choke, etc. Went to a 180 and it's much better. 195 was stock. Fuel economy would probably be better with the 195.

I'm running a 160* thermostart after replacing radiator seals, flushing the system and replacing with 15% antifreeze/85% distilled water and one bottle of Water Wetter. Car won't go over 160* now even in the 92* humid climate in Florida. I am told 180*-185* is better, and so far they may be right. My engine feels a little sleepy. May go to a 185* thermostat at some point. If the rest of your system is working well, I wouldn't go below a 185* and I think 190* is almost perfect.
