Default C3 members with 454`S chime in

Guys some feed back on what camshaft you guys have installed and what results I plan to stay with stock intake and exhaust manifolds and the stock 1800 converter in 400 trans. My cam is shot and looking to use a kit and replace rockers and pushrods also.

The stock intake and exhaust is very restrictive so I'd stay with a cam with no more than 220 dgr duration @050. There are many grinders out there with cams like this. Comp, Crane, Isky, Lunati etc etc. If you want some lope at idle you can order it with a tight lobe separation. About 108 should lope some. A 112 LSA will idle smooth. Your choice.

Sounds like Zwede knows his stuff. Unfortunately I don't know that much about all those engine numbers stuff. Need to learn a bit. Anyone running a 4spd with their 454? My 454 is a late 70's block but with the original 4spd muncie. The clutch fork hits the driver floor right beneath the gas pedal so there's a huge hole. I haven't driven the car since I only purchased it in late dec. Any of you C3's with a 454 have this issue or know how to solve it? Don't mean to jack your thread but I don't see many threads geared towards the 454 c3. I will also be looking to modify my engine next year so I'm in the research stage. Good luck.

Zwede is right on,..something in the 220-222 range would be great. You might look at Comp's High Energy line,..very torquey stuff.

Good luck!

I just finished replacing the cam, rockers, heads, intake and carb on my 72 454, haven't got too much seat of the pants dyno time on the road yet. The object was to acheive a low-mid range torque monster, with neck snapping throttle response off idle.

I probably went way too conserveative on the cam, I don't recall off hand the P/N, but its a Crane hydralic, with .499 lift on both the I & E. Very smooth idle, something like 24" of Hg manifold vac. @ idle in nutrael. The P.O. had put in an early Crane Fireball cam with about the same lift, but a lot more overlap, resulting in **** poor vac @ idle, which contributed to crummy PB function.

I added Edelbrock's Performer alum. heads and Comp Cams roller rockers, a dual plane manifold, and a 650 CFM Vac secondary Holley. I am in the process of installing a L-88 style hood to cap it off. Once I get a little more road time, I'll post my impressions.

Cheers

Default 69acint

Hope this helps, I have a 69 427 30 over, that I put in a comp cam 268H. Don't know the specifics, brother in law helped - "drag racer in San Diego" anyway he told me its the biggest cam I could put in with an automatic, and I was going for the low end range, that was in 98. Awesome throttle response, very happy.

I'm not sure of the specs of my engine. All i know is its a late 70's PASS 454 in 68 vette. I pulled the clutch assembly and flywheel last night and found "HI PERF" stamped on the rear of the engine. Any of you guys have this marking on your 454 blocks? trying to figure out if this is a vette engine and what it produced stock. Haven't opened her up yet to see whats inside. Any thoughts?

I used Comp cams 270 hydraulic roller. (218-224 @ 50 with 510 lift) Good street cam probably could have gone to the 280. Consider replacing the intake and heads with aluminum. A lot more $$ but you'll "feel" the difference both by weight and seat of your pants. These BB's need to breathe!

JerryLee,
Have most of my info at home but I have written down
Block # 361959
VIN: C9Z209270
Intake is an aluminium 66-68 396ci L78 model # 3885069

U know of a source of ID #'s for GM? I've been pulling everything off my vette to rebuild and I'd like to see what the #'s on my engine, trans, and differential mean.
Thanks
