Ordered and EB fuel pump for sb chevy and it won't fit the opening in the block of the new crate. The old fuel pump looks like a direct matchup, but the fuel rod is to big. Help??
Not sure. Marshall engines uses EB mechanical fuel pumps on their dressed crates, so that is what I ordered. There is a hole for the fuel rod to go into, and a place for the pump to mount, it's just doesn't match up.
I'm confused. The pumps look the same, so I'll assume it's right. You say the pushrod is "too big", by that do you mean it's "in the way" (as in too long) when you attempt to insert the lever into the slot in the cover plate? Or is it physically bigger? I'm guessing the pushrod just slid down and all you need to do it hold it up as you slip the pump lever in front of it. I use a long feeler gauge to do it, but a long skinny screwdriver would work as well. One of the bolt holes in the front of the block goes through to the pump pushrod bore, so you can run a long bolt in there to hold it in place as well. Just remember to take it back out! If you don't mount a bracket there, you need to add a short bolt to prevent a BIG oil leak from that hole.
If it's a different problem, give us a bit more info.
Okay....just checked again. The rod does indeed fit, was looking at the wrong hole, silly me. The old fuel pump is a 4 bolt mount and a bigger opening that the replacement pump I ordered. The old pump does match up. The new pump is a 2 bolt, and won't cover the opening. I double checked the order, and it appears correct.
What you need is a block plate for that pump. Not all sbc fuel pumps cover the whole opening and most that I have put together just have a plate that goes between the pump and the block called a "fuel pump mounting plate" like the one on the left.jegs catalog no 720-1514

Stupid me..... The mounting plate was on the old fuel pump!! It looked like it was all one piece until I cleaned it up and saw a gasket. Broke it loose, cleaned it up, and now it will work!!
Now.....what do I do about the return gas line? There are two lines on the car, one for supply to the pump, and one for return to the tank. The new fuel pump only has an inlet and outlet, not three connections like the old pump.
I just blocked off my return line.....Some people say you should run it up to the carb and blah blah.......but I have had no problems after blocking it off.............Well i should say no FUEL related problems
Thanks again for all the help. Now how do I tell which line is the return line now that I have everything unhooked? Is it the one that keeps dumping gas on my garage floor? Or is that back siphon from the return?
