Default Pittman Arm R&R

Getting ready to remove my power steering Pittman Arm and replace it with a manual one. Already removed the centerlink, but it looks like the new manual centerlink needs to be installed or a massive piece of pipe needs to be used to hold the Pittman arm to break the nut.
Probably not a good idea to put that much stress on the steering box?

That pitman arm bolt should not be on ther very tight. if it is not connected to the drag link, you can eiater turn the wheel to the lock and loosen the nut, or just slide an extension or some thing to hold the arm in place while you loosen. should be that hard to do

One the nust is loose, use a pitman arm puller, or a large picle fork to get separate the arm fromthe steering box

See my post in the general section of this Forum. Visit your local Auto Zone and borrow their pitman arm puller.

Use an air wrench on the nut. Off in a jiffy with no leverage problems. It's the socket size that's a problem - 1 3/16" or something like that. Bought one at Sears.

Been trying to figure out the size of the Pitman Arm nut. It measures 1 5/16" on the flats and 1 1/2" to the points. Just got a 1 1/2" socket and it's too big. I think it's a 1 5/16" six point?

I too think it is 1 5/16th. Getting the nut loose is easy compared to pullling it off. Even with a pitman arm puller they can be a real problem pulling them off. I don't like the idea of hitting it sideways with a pickle for fork even if you could get one big enough in there.

i had to heat my pitman arm up to get it off.....it was a real chore even with a puller and the torch....and it was sitting on the work bench in a vise while i did this....

1 5/16 is correct. I use a 3/4" socket set to break them loose then heat the arm with a propane and use the $7 tie rod puller and an impact gun. Works ever time.
