69 350/300hp vs 71 350/270hp
Guys, I am having to make a decision today. Hope someone can help.
I am going to buy either a 69 Auto with a 350/300HP or a 71 4spd with a 350/270HP
The cars are virtually identical in condition and options and the price is the same.
From your experience, does that 30 hp make that much difference? And what mods could be done to get that extra 30 hp without altering the cars originality too much?

I doubt you are going to see or feel much of a difference between the two car. The '69 auto may have a bit more HP at the crank but the auto trans will typically "absorb" more HP than a 4-speed so you will probably end up with roughly the same amount of rwhp or close to it.
I think the better way to decide would sinply be the differences between the two different cars.
Do you have a preference between an auto or 4-speed?
do you prefer the '69 body or the '71 body with the slighly flaired out rear quarters?
Do you prefer one cars color over the other?
if resale value down the road is a concern, are both cars original motor cars, or both NOM, or one original and one NOM..... ??

tuff choice....see if the guy will offer a two for one deal....
Personally I like the 4spd but I like the 69 body style.
Too bad you couldn't get the best of both worlds.
Not sure of the resale value b/w then since both are small blocks in years where big blocks ruled the roads and consumers bank accounts.
Are you going to drive it alot? if so rate them on the fun-o-meter and pick the one that you would enjoy most.
Good luck...

But ... if you want a little more from the 71 270 4spd:
Beginning 71 GM began w/ ignition timing curves to help meet emission ... a change/recurve there will help. Dropped compression ratio same year (L48-270 motor has dished pistons) ... if you want more hp, a set of flattop pistons & a slight cam upgrade will boost hp 30 or more. None of the suggested changes are visibly detectable. I must admit ... I like both 69 & 71 ... but prefer 71 styling over 69 ... 'specially 70-up flares & 70-72 "eggcrate/icetray" side grilles.

the hp's shouldn't make a difference but an auto vs a 4 speed should.
buy what you would like to drive. I would buy a 4 spd car over an auto anyday. .02

Oooooh Tough call
personally id go with the 4 speed over the gills...
as far as the 30 Hp, well you can get that back easy with bolt on mods
I say mix your own gears and take the fender flares , even though i like the look of the gills over the egg crates

A 4 speed car is more fun for me. I can't see having an automatic in a toy, too boring (just my opinion).
Also, comparing '69 ratings with '71 ratings is not an apples to apples comparison. '69 hp ratings were "gross" and '71 hp was "net." Other than lower compression (pistons), TCS and hardened valve seats (ability to run unleaded regular fuel) on the '71, the engines are identical.

The 4-speed would swing the deal for me. Automatic base engine bumper sharks are not worth as much as a stick car at reasale time as far as I have seen.
How could you loose either way.
