I have been haveing this heat soak deal. When my 1974 stock 350 vette gets hot it won't turn over till it cools off. I went to the junk yard this week end and got a starter off a 1996 GM 1500 full size truck V8 350 engine.I read on the forum that this is a mini starter that would fix this heat soak thing
I now have the starter and see there is only two post on it. Mine has three. Can someone tell how to wire it up. I seem to remember reading a posting on this before but did not understand it.
One of the post is for the battery, that is easy. The second is to energize the solenoid to turn on the starter. The other post gives your coil 12 volts for starting. You may be able to do without the staight 12 volts or put an HEI distributor in.
I had the same problem with my new mini starter. Powermaster makes a mini starter solenoid that has the R terminal for 28 bucks. You can order it from Summit. Mine should come in tomorrow or Wednesday. I will let you know how it works out.
The R terminal is for the resistor wire to the dist. If you are running points you need this. If you are running a HEI or without points this is not needed. This wire is designed to give the points a full 12 volts at startup. This helps start the car. The points will burn up if 12 volts is run all the time. They run with about 9 volts once the car is running. I am running a Crane HI6 so I just taped this wire out of the way. Hope this helps.
