Default How do you identify a Dana 44 from a 36?

On a 80-82 rear end how do you tell the difference between a Dana 44 and a Dana 36?
Is it the diameter of the ring gear?
How big is a 44 ring gear verses a 36?
Do 5/16 bolts on the side yolks indicate its a 44 and 1/4 a 36?
Is there a difference in bolt size on the pinion straps?
Any other differences internal or external?

The Dana 44 has two bolts in top of rear cover.
The Dana 36 has one bolt in top center.
44 has nine bolts overall in rear cover
36 has eight bolts.
I read this somewhere from a reliable source.

80-82 corvettes have 6 cover bolts.
I am trying to find out the difference between the rear ends used in 4 speed and auto transmission cars 80-82.
I was told that the 4 speed cars used Dana 44 internals and the auto cars Dana 36 internals.
Perhaps this was bad information confused with C4 insted of C3.
Manual trans cars have 5/16" bolt side yolks.
Auto cars have 1/4" bolt side yolks.
Are the yolks the only difference or are they different internaly and if so how do you tell them apart?
Are the yolks interchangeable?
Is there a difference in the bolt size on the pinion yolk?

I guess wherever I read that they were referring to the C4's. I have read that all 80-82 have Dana 44's and then some say that's not true. I don't know, I don't even know what I have.

I know 82's have 44's in them. That's what mine has and they didn't make a 4 speed car in 82 that wasn't an auto

all 80-82s are Dana44
The C4 automatics (and all 84s) came with the Dana 36, it's a whole different animal. The C4 D36 can be identified by 3 bolts on the top of the lid where 1 is in the center, the C4 SUPER!!! (<- keyword right there) has 2 bolts. The C4 SUPER Dana44 is completely different from the C3 one apart from ring gear size. It's called a super 44 because it has a Dana60 sized pinion, that's why you need a pinion spacer/filler sleeve to use the jeep Dana44 ring and pinion gear in it (Toms sells that) Basically it's the exact same differential as the one in the vipers (I mthink the new viper even used it until 06 with the stub axles and halfshafts replaced for CV joints and drive axles like the C5/6 has) the only difference is that the Viper has a much smaller batwing and the C beam pad is on the other side of the diff...if you were to get creative it wouldn't be that hard to stuff one in a C3. I almost went that route but then found A C4 S D44, the viper ones usually go a good bit cheaper than the C4 ones.

The only difference between the different 80-82 differentials is that all 80&81 manuals and all 82s have larger 5/16 bolts on the stub axles vs the 1/4th bolts on all 80 & 81 automatics. (and GM was so smart to move the bolt hole for the smaller size slightly outboard so you can't redrill your stubs for the larger bolts..how convenient)

C3 82 Dana44:

C4 super Dana 44

C4 Super D44 left, C3 D44 right

C4 super dana 44 on top, C4 Dana 36 on the bottom
