Need engine specs, Trans info and rear gear ratio to make a recommendation. With a mild roller (under .550 lift) I think you may give up a few Ft lbs in maybe a 500 RPM or less range with a hydraulic vs solid. If you are looking for every sliver of power a solid my be better but the trade off is more maintainance and shorter life expectancy.

My HP was still climbing at 6500RPM on my 406ci. IF you have race ported heads then the heads should support 6500+ RPM no problem so your HP should still be climbing at and beyond 6000RPM to valve float, can't figure that out.

Also you vacuum is too low for some reason, I have a 242/248 duration and put 10-11" at idle.

So - this is somewhat in the range you guys are suggesting to ensure no detonation? The 6400 is nice - not that I wouldl visit that...but what concerns me is the memo on 500+ c.u. requirement and a 3500 converter

Thanks to all you that helped me on this, I learned quite a lot with this thread. I have a low mileage 355 with forged flat tops that I'm stealing off my kid. I am going to order the AFR 180 Competion heads, the Crane Pro Series shaft rockers & go with a solid roller. I was considering doing a complete engine build with a aftermaket 4 1/8" block, but using this engine I can afford to go to a 5 speed with a little more gear this year. I also ordered Comp Cams "Camquest 6" to banter around numbers. Now I need to figure out how many cc head I need to order so I can get this going, it's a 2-3 month wait on the heads! Thanks again!

Seriously though good move, those are the new design AFR heads ? If they are they flow good, that will be a killer motor

Also if you are looking at the Comp Cams lifters, make sure you get the new design with the roller oiling hole, lots if the old ones around at the jobbers and stores

Actually, I think I might get a kit off them, I have to do the arithmatic, they will grind it with the 4/7 swap. What "cc" head should I order? I was thinking 64, I thought this would be the right choice running a flat top piston 355 now & when I recover from $$$$$ this year, I think they will be OK for the 377 or 400 shortblock I build next year....what d'ya think??????

After building the most radical 502 then 572 blown motors and a blown pantera 351w... and i've had more cam changes than ex wives (a lot..lol).... i've only done either hydro roller or solid roller....never had standard lifter engine...

BUT...i can tell you... if your stroke is not too long... (ie 377ci short stroke 400)... you can not lose with a solid roller.... they are the freaking BEST.... it feels like your engine finally breathes...

peaky, feel wize...it feels like your engine breathes...and revs...
