About 50 horsepower. An L-48 that has had the motor rebuilt may make L-82 horspower as most are upgraded when rebuilt. The valve covers were aluminumn on L82's and painted on L-48's in most shark years.

There was only a 30hp difference in 79. 195 vs 225hp. But man was it expensive. $595 extra. The only other expensive option I got was AC. Cost me $635. I knew I wasn't going to leave this engine stock very long, and I wanted the forged crank, forged rods, forged pistons, four bolt mains, and most importantly, the 2.02 heads. I think the L82 got a higher stall converter too. The heads and L82 cam made the 30hp difference. What I was paying for was potential. Tossed the AC and switched to aluminum heads, but I'm glad I got an L82 block and internals.

I think it can vary by year so you need to be specific as to the model year...? L48 ran from 69 to 80 or 81 in C3s. L82 intro'd around 74 as I recall.

Based on a few years I'm familiar with... different cam obviously - the L82 is more or less akin to the L46 cam if not the same (in fact the L82 is essentially the L46 'heir' if you will). Heads had threaded vs pressed studs and perhaps larger valves. Forged pistons usually. Flat tops as I recall (depending on year?). Did they not have aluminum intake as well?

Yep, the L82 had aluminum intake and dual snorkel air cleaner housing, the L48 got both later. I forgot that the 2.02 heads also got screw in studs. Like I said before, you weren't paying for the additional 30hp so much, but the potential.

One is really slow and one is just slow.
On my 75, you could get the 165 hp L48 or the 205 hp L82.

The L48 was originally called the ZQ3 or QZ3, I think - same crap, different name. The L82 came out in '73 and up to and including '74, was a decent factory motor producing 250 hp (only 5 less than the 1972 LT1, and more "user friendly"). 1980 was the last year for both the L48 and the L82 - in '81, the L81 was the only available engine, complete with the arrival of what GM called "Computer Control Command." As someone else already said, the L82 was at least born with potential. The L48 was born to be a boat anchor.

I think the LT1 engine went to hydraulic lifters in 72, but when the LT1 went to a low rise intake manifold with Quadrajet, they renamed it L82. Don't quote me, it was a long, long, time ago. And I can't remember what I had for breakfast today.

LT-1 still solid lifters through 72, but yes the L-82 was basically the LT-1 with the hydraulic camshaft from the 1969 L46 along with a low rise iron intake and q-jet carb. All the internal HD LT-1 stuff remained that's why they cost so much extra.

L82 engine also had a windage tray in the bottom end as well as pushrod guide plates in the heads.

I've owned a 78 L-82 4 speed 3.70 rear for 27 years now..can't say enough for that engine...130,000 miles and counting..only repairs were welding corrosion on intake and one broken valve spring....
Yeah,just a cruiser,but still fun to drive...
