I just had this problem happen awile back. I just started at the brake light switch mounted at the top of the brake pedal. what had happened was the clip had broke and the switch had moved with the brake pedal moving causing the brake lights not to come on. Check power at brake light switch and move from there. Good Luck B.C.
Don't brake lights have their own fuse? If so, you may look into that. I know it's hard to get to, and even harder to replace a fuse if it's bad...but if the switch doesn't pan out it's another option.
It's also a good idea to check the bulbs and probably the easiest thing to do. I know it's a long shot but I had both low beams headlights go out at practically the same time on my '76.
Thanks for the advice. I just checked the bulbs and both filaments seem to work (different one lit when i turned on the directional vs the hazards). For a couple of bucks i may pick up new bulbs just for the heck of it.
I took a look under the dash near the brake pedal and there's a lot of stuff under there. Is this the switch?
This picture was taken with the brake pressed. When i release the the brake the metal piece seems to push in little white button....so i'm guessing this is ok?

Yeah, the switch looks to be working mechanically, but the inside of the switch may have failed. You need to test the wires and see if a current is switched on with the switch. May need to be replaced.
Problem solved
I put a new fuse in and that didn't do it. Then i simply disconnected the switch to test to see if there was a current...and when i plugged it back in the lights started working. Not sure if it was just wasn't plugged in all the way (although it seemed like it was) or if it was a combination of that and the fuse. But either way I'm all set.
Thanks all for your help. Learned something new today. And I think my skills at the game twister have probably improved too after contorting my body to get at the switch and fuses.
