I think they are cheap. Look closer at one of these supports. They are made up of several individual stamping, spot welded together, and ecoated. The tooling alone would be $100,000. If you amortitize that over 1000 parts, that's $100 each just for tooling. Then you have to buy steel. and pay someone to stamp these out. Fixtures are required to hold the parts in place while spot welding. I think buying a new core support is the best value for the dollar invested than any other part on the car and I don't even sell them.

I think the average Joe, including myself, do not have any idea of what the is cost is to make 1. That first one is expensive. As production increases, the cost comes down.
The other thing is how many are sold each year. Going with Tom's example. The yearly cost of $100,000 on a 10 year loan at 12% is going to be over $14,000 a year. If they sell 100 units for 10 years, the cost for tooling per unit is going to be $140.
