Looking to put true duals on my '75 L48. On a related note, also thinking about headers. I know you're not supposed to, but would a '74 exhaust fit on my '75? The only difference is the cat convert, right? Should I look for new mufflers too? Also wondering how difficult it is to convert to duals and what type of performance boost to expect.
You wont be sorry...I truly believe I gained just as much of a boost with my true dual chambered pipes as I did w/my cam/intake change.....now runs like a Vette and sounds like a Vette...and that makes me :D :D :D tnt76vette
ceramic headers from Jegs - $205
local exhaust guy to weld 2 1/2 pipe under the car - $120-$150
10" glass paks - $20
3" chrome tips out the back - $22
total - $365 - 395.... lotsa h.p. gained
tried 4 different mufflers but could not tolerate thier unique sounds... the glass packs placed at the end of the exhuast pipe just prior to the tips give a true throaty rumble, no tinny sound or crackel.. just grunt!
Good luck.

I went with Hooker's true dual pipes, headers & chambered mufflers. Everything fit great and runs great and I like the sound. Look up the part numbers from their web site. I bought everything thru Summit.
I bought the ceramic coated headers from Jeggs $200.00
I'm having local muffler shop install duel pipes to the back $325.00
Same muffler shop charging me $90.00 for a pair of turbo mufflers, installed.
headers installation $250.00. It took them about 6 hours.
Total cost=$865.00
I'm getting the car tomorrow.

Dynomax coated headers $190
Flowmaster 40s $55ea - $110
Local Exhaust shop fabricated and welded it all together with 2.5" pipe. $325
They also removed my old manifolds and put the headers on $240 (I couldn't get the manifolds off!!)
Yes that is alot of money! I did not spend the $860.00 all in one time but in incraments so it did not hurt as much. I was planning on doing most of the work myself. I ordered the headers, after I got the headers I noticed all the manifold bolts were rusted on so I decited to have them installed at a place that can deal with broken studs and redoing air conditioning brackets. I then brought the car to Minekie and they quoted me $300.00 for the duel pipes. then I heard some ones duel pipes and they sounded pretty loud. So I had minekie install small turbo mufflers.... So the expense was not anticipated. If I knew it was going to cost so much I would have waited another year. But I kept getting myself deeper and deeper to the point of no return. But all in all It had to be done because the old pipes were leaking so it was do it now or do it later.

Chambered Pipes from Mid Am 299.99. Local muff shop installs: 120.00. 420.00 plus tax....sounds like I saved abt 400 bucks... :D :D :D :flag
Maybe you saved 400, but you didn't get the headers. I plan on getting headers ($219 now), better gaskets, locking bolts, etc. (app. $85), and then I still have to get the pipes and mufflers (haven't priced them yet). It all depends on what you want. I'm sure the chambered pipes sound sweet but I don't really want mine that loud.
Think of it this way friend; the only time they're LOUD is when I want them to be...they really are great for cruisin too as a conversation or listening to the radio is no problem... :yesnod: :flag

Really? Hmm, maybe I'll have to consider them. The only problem I find is that they are designed to bolt up to the manifolds and I want to install headers. Not sure how much extra cost would be involved to have them cut off so they would fit the headers. I'll have to do some research.
You could always maintain the intent of the emissions stuff and put a cat behind each bank.
While you would maintain the intent, it would still technically be illegal (not that what any of us are suggesting is legal anyway). According to the stupid laws, you can only replace what was originally on the car from the factory, you can't add to it and you can't remove from it. If it had only one cat, you can only put on one cat. To be completely legal and still get some decent performance, you would have to go to a larger pipe where the two meet up, stay with a large hi-flo cat, and then split the pipes again to go out the back. Stupid law.
depends on the state. Some just say you need a cat(I can't remember exactly how its wored). Somewhat of a loop hole I think. But it basically means if you have seperate pipes, you can have 2 cat's. It would seem dumb to me that they would force you to use a 2-1-2 when duels with a cat on each is just as effective(at least I think it is).
I went with Allens chambers with my 75 but I didnt use headers. It bolted right up to the manifolds and you cant beat the sound. I heard of many people that didnt have luck with Allens exhaust with headers. Took about three hours to remove/replace. Good Luck
