Default Crane vs comp - 110 vs 112 LS

I narrowed my search down to three camshafts that (I think) are a good fit for my sb.

Here's the specs:
383 stroker sb, forged pistons with 18cc dish and 64cc heads - 9.7:1CR

Here's the cams:

Comp Cams CS XR276HR-10
224/230 dur@.050" and .502/.510" lift 110LS

Comp Cams CS XR282HR-10
230/236 dur@.050" and .510/.520 lift 110 LS

Crane powermax #119831
222/230 dur@.050" and .509"/.528" lift 112LS

I am leaning towards the XR282 but I've read that 112 LS is preferred by many members - maybe the Crane cam is the better choice ?

My heads maximum lift is advertized at .575" but I'd like to stay well below that.

EDIT:
The trans is a TKO600 and the rear end ratio is 3.55

You can order the 282 with 112 LSA with a 1 day lead time. I like the specs on it the best for your engine. but you should list your trans and rear end ratios to better get a feel for what you really need.

I added that info above in the first post.

The XR282 HR with 112 LSA is the cam! 112 LSA will give you a little smoother idle, Flatter torque curve, a wider operating range and increase your DCR a little. All good for a street ride!

xr282 still wouldn't be that bad on 110lsa in a 383...still very streetable and smooth.

My vote would be for the XR282. Your 383 will like more duration than you would expect of a 350. I do however prefer a wider lobe center if everything else is equal.

If you like the the HR276 its availabel with a 112 LSA....under the marine cams, same specs just a wider LSA. I have the same set up only with a TH400 with 308 rear gear and this is what ordered.

Re the 1 day for custom grinds ...I ordered the marine cam from Summit on 12/22. I was told it would drop ship from Comp on 12/27. Called on 1/3 looking for the cam, told it shipped on 1/2!! Just got an email this weekend that is shipped Friday 1/5......from Ohio....

I used this one on my first 383 and it was nice. I used 1.65 intake rockers and 1.6 exhaust in the solid roller version of this cam. It should be about the biggest cam for a sub 10:1 C/R

Comp Cams CS XR276HR-10
224/230 dur@.050" and .502/.510" lift 110LS - Too mild for a 383 for optimum performance.

Comp Cams CS XR282HR-10
230/236 dur@.050" and .510/.520 lift 110 LS - Good all around cam. This would be my choice out of these 3 for sure. Still slightly mild for a stroker though.

Crane powermax #119831 - Too low duration figures for a 383.
222/230 dur@.050" and .509"/.528" lift 112LS

I think a 110 lobe separation is the best for all around use. You'll get a much better "bump" at idle and a good torque curve as well.

Have you checked out the CS XR288HR-10:
Basic Operating RPM Range: 2,500-6,000 RPM
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 236 int./242 exh.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.520 int./0.540 exh. lift
Lobe Separation (degrees): 110

xr288 is a big cam..biggest i would run on the street in a HR..i have that cam on a 112lsa, and it idles nicely right at 1000rpms, cruises 2000rpms with no problems, and pulls like an animal to 5500-6000rpm max on my AFR195 headed 383....But I think MYBAD79 is going to need more compression and maybe bigger heads to see its potential.

I have the Crane in my 383. It runs great and sounds good. Good vacuum, idles at 900 rpms. 700R4 trans, 9.2 compression, and 3:70 gears.

I would but the cam again.

Thanks everybody, I think I decided on the 282. If they can get it on 112LS that would be preferred but it seems that 110LS is fine too....

The 288 might be a little too much with only 9.7:1 cr but I'm sure it sounds great at idle

I sure want to hear the cam at idle but I also want to be able to cruise at 2000rpm... gotta find a happy medium here, this is not going to be a race car

this was key when i was picking out the combo for my 2nd 383..(the first 383 was not streetable to my likings...240/246 cam..yaddy yaddy yada). realize you don't have a race car, and know that choppy idles get old really fast, and no bottom end power sucks for the street. I think you made a wise choice with the 282. good luck.

Good Choice for your application! I used the XR288HR in my 383 with a 114 LSA. I am running 10.2 to 1 compression and Tripower with a 150 NOS shot. Nitrous likes a wider LSA I also have 4.11 gears and an Autogear M22 Rockcrusher. With your comp and gears a 282 on 112 LSA should be a good choice.

It's ordered

I ordered it thru the engine shop that builds my short block. They're installing and degreeing it for a very small extra charge: the cam, OEM style lifters, retainers and hardware, true/double roller timing chain set, thrust plate and 2-piece cover for $540. That's not much more than the parts
