Default HOW: Fiber Optics Sensors to Headlights??

I am retrofitting my '72 with fiber optics. I've got the parts for rear tails/license lamp (new housings, grommets, lenses, etc.) and ditto for the front parking lamps... but I still can't picture exactly how the connection is done for the front headlamps. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

The fiber optic cable comes through the center of the connector and is aluminated by a nub between the terminals on the headlight. They are special connectors.

There is a little nipple on the back side of the headlamps that the fiber optics pick up the light from. Most new halogen lamps have this coated with some sort of paint. To make them work I just scraped off the "paint" from the back of the lamp. If you want to know how they are attached I'll try and take a picture for you if I can get a good shot of them. You might want to try looking in the AIM to see if it is pictured there. BTW fiber optics rule! I love the system. It's indicated a couple of burnt out bulbs since I've owned the car.

Are there repair kits for fiberoptics? Bubba cut the fiberoptics wires just in front of the firewall on qa 69 I'm working on and the rest is all there

I think the big vendors have replacement fiber-optic cabling.

try using a 1/8 brass compression fitting. The ends need to be clean and cut as square as possible. Butt the ends together in the fitting before tigntening. The fibers are plastic and cut easily with a new razor blade.

I don't want the repop stuff, it's not as good as the original. far fewer strands, I'd like to know of a way to make a good connection between 2 ends

TT, you can use 1/8'th inch compression fittings and tape. You want the ends of the cables looking at each other not overlapped. Don't torque down on the compression fittings. Make them just tight enough to hold the cables in alignment while you tape the fitting up good. The taps actually holds the cable in the fittings.

I still have some small steel connector crimp sleeves somewhere, I'll see if those work. If that won't work I'll have to try the comp. fittings

Default Thanks!!

Great help -- thanks! Only concern now is that the Fiber Optic sub-assemblies I've ordered won't come with those connectors...could have ordered the entire front lighting harnesses for $100 more...hopefully I can find those connectors separately!

Thanks, again!

Default Update

Turns out the General kept using the headlight connectors with the fiber optic receptacle in '72! -- so, I don't have to convert anything else and the "Fiber Optic Sub-Assembly" will plug right in!

Thanks for the great pics!!!
