Default 77 Windshield Trim question

77/350- Im in the process of replacing the w/s on the door & windshiled pillar. When I removed the windshield pillar w/s the windshield trim came off too as the same screws that hold the w/s hold this trim piece on. I did a search of old threads and found some useful info but there is some conflict in info.
questions:
1. do the side trim pieces go under or over the top trim piece?
2. is there a gasketing material that goes under the trim pieces or do they just butt to the glass - seams like they would eventually scratch the glass if they just lay on the glass. There was some caluking goop on them that looked like crap?
3. If there is no gasketing material whats everyone else using?
4 Thought I'd repaint the trim pieces as I take them off. Semigloss or flat look better?
5. Think I can just use Krylon or Rustoleum?
Anyone got a pic of a quality job they did?

Finally just a word of caution. I tried denatured alchol and mineral spirits to remove the old glue neither worked. I found a spray can of "Goof Off" which removes most anything and it worked great but the mixture of all the fumes was overpowering in a closed heated garage. Nasty headache all day Sunday.
Thanks, chuck
