Default Distributor Choices.

I have an LT1 manifold going onto my 405, and I have the EGR boss completely machined off so I can use either the large cap HEI like I have now on my Vette, or a small cap like I originally planned and an external coil.

I'm wondering if there are draw backs to either, and if one or the other would be better. I have not had my LT1 harness made yet so I don't have the wiring for the distributor planned yet. At this point I can go both ways.

Any suggestion?

have you seen the distributor caps that are "oriented" correctly with the spark plug wires for each side located on that side of the dist cap?.....i would find that cap in a good quality one and match an HEI set up to it.

If you get a big cap, make sure it's one set up for computer advance. No real point in using a mechanical advance with an EFI system.

i had an accell hei set up on my 75 with the super coil and it sucked bad. it would burn modules up constantly. i was left stranded at least 6 or 7 times. it got so bad i would just keep a spare and return the burned out ones under warranty. i went to an msd 6al set up and have had nothing but good luck with it.

DB, I swapped over to TPI, I used the 81 dist. with a non-corected cap. If have do any work back there later on Its still tight! If your going to use the big cap try and get a corrected cap cleans it up some and frees up a litte space.

You have to use an ECM controled distributer for the advance.

Supposedly the separate oil filled coil is better than the integral epoxy filled large cap coil, but I have had no problems with them.

Thanks every one. I'm still debating, and now that I have the cap worked out I need to find a non-mechanical distributor.

I have built two converted LT1 manifolds now. One has the EGR boss completely removed and the other is notched for the small cap HEI. If you are using the Corvette fuel rails which exit to the passenger side then you have to use the small cap HEI. The large cap HEI will not fit with the Corvette fuel rails. If you use the Camaro/Firebird fuel rails that exit to the drivers side then the large cap HEI will work. I don't like using the Camaro fuel rails because they exit the wrong way and you have to make the hoses do a u turn and come back to the passenger side for hook up to the steel lines at the frame. I also feel the look of the LT1 conversion is a little bit more appealing with the smaller cap HEI. It doesn't stand out as much as the large cap HEI.

Thanks for letting me know that. I am using a Corvette fuel rail and had no idea the large cap would not fit. Thanks.

I have followed the post where you purchased the LT1 manifold from "RANDYJ75". It looks like he still has the Corvette fuel rails for sale. I think you might be getting the Camaro rails. Has it arrived yet?

I asked that Randy not sell me his fuel rails...all he's sending me is the manifold. I have my own Corvette fuel rail I got off of Ebay.

If you use the Corvette fuel rails the schrader valve has to be removed as it bumps into the side of the smallcap HEI. You can grind most of it away and then weld the remaining hole closed. I then drilled and tapped the passenger side fuel rail for a TPI style thread in schrader valve. You can find these easily at the local wrecking yard. They are used on many different GM cars.
