Who makes the best 700R4 transmission?
I need to replace the transmission in my 1982, and want to upgrade to a strong performance transmission.
Gear Star makes one with a 2200 RPM stall Yank converter and an installation kit with a Hayes cooler for about $1,800 that handles 400 HP and comes with a 24 month warranty.
Or maybe a TCI Streetfighter transmission.
I have found one on ebay for $1,050 that looks to be about the same, but with a cheaper 2000 RPM stall converter. For another $300, I can get a better converter.
Do you guys know of another source, that might be a better deal? I will try a couple local shops, to see what kind of deal I can get.

Try Bow Tie Overdrives.
You want one made from 88 parts on up, with a corvette servo, and a Transgo Kit installed.

Try local shops as well. They can be as good or better than some of the big name places.
I have a car I recently had a 700R4 installed in. The tranny guy wanted to know the rear axle ratio, cam profile, engine horsepower and torque, etc., and set up the tranny specifically for what I wanted and needed.
I don't think you can always get that on a transmission you have shipped in, depending on the vendor.

I got mine from a local builder here in central Fl. The owner/builder will build it as strong as you need it and is out the door for 1,145.00 plus shipping, including converter, tv cable, new rubber mount, dip stick and brake switch. Stronger parts for more than 350-400 hp would cost a bit more.
Meant to add that he only uses trannys of the later years as his starting point. 87 and up I think. I put over 6000 miles on mine last year and it runs great.

My Bow-Tie unit cost around $1,650 delivered to a freight terminal back in 2000. I also installed it myself.

Art Carr, he was the first to develop an aftermarket racing OD transmission, he sells HD 700R4 also.

82 was the first year for the 700R4 and GM had a lot of warranty issues for a few years. The guy I bought my 82CE from had planned on keeping the car forever and he was aware of the reliability of the trans.Even though the car only had 24,000 on it he had the trans rebuilt at the dealership usuing the newer stronger parts, while the trans was apart he had a shift kit installed and so far NO PROBLEMS after another 15,000 miles. You might want to check into going that direction if you are just looking for reliabilty.

Remember if you get one yourself and you have trouble with it, you have to take it out to send it back. If you have a local guy do the whole job the install and/or removal is on him if there is a warranty issue. I had mine rebuilt with the latest parts and set up the way I wanted, with the converter for under $1500 installed. It's like having a new car, shifts are nice and firm.
