When I added an oil temp. gauge, I moved the oil pressure sender to top of block & put the oil temp. sender by the oil filter.
Later I found out Corvette engineering agrees w/ me.

I already have the mechanical pressure sender at top of the block, driver's side of the distributor, where is supposed to be? by the filter on a 1972?

thanks

Good. Typically a mechanical gauge sender is at the top location on SBC. 77 is electric.

I just had my machine shop drill and tap the stock oil pan plug for the 1/8" NPT thread for the Autometer sending unit. The port on the block above the oil filter has been pluged long ago.

I installed a bung in the oil pan when it was off the car but find the oil temp doesn't get very hot. It runs about 20 degrees below the water temp and seldom goes above 180. If it does creep up in stop and go traffic it quickly drops back down on the open road.
It seems to consistantly follow the water temp but lags by this 20 degrees.

well, thanks for prompt replies

I believe oil temp should be > than water temp. otherwise why all the oil gauges have an higher max temp?

maybe your sensor is in the wrong place?
