Default 79 L-82 Valve Cover Gaskets

Hi guys,

I'm usually over at the C-1 forum looking for parts and info on my long term 59 project. I do check out this site every day or two and usually always learn something. Both sites are great sources of info.

I'm having Vette driving withdrawls so need to attend to a few things on our 79 L-82 (4 speed) so I can drive it and enjoy the summer a bit more.

The number 3 cylinder spark plug is oil fouling. I'm hoping it's just valve seals so I don't have to pull the heads. I took off the valve cover and had to work to get the gasket sealer I used (The Right Stuff) to let loose. I used that sealer a few years back as the original aluminum valve covers leaked with the cork gaskets that were under them.

What do you guys recommend for sealing those old aluminum valve covers? I've heard that sometimes the aluminum covers get destorted, but I think mine fit OK.

Thanks, Doug

One thing I always do is to use sealer on the cover side only so the head stays nice and clean and the covers pop right off.....

I've had L-82 covers on mine now for about 7 years or so & I still don't leak a drop. I do remember triming the gaskets a little since the aluminum covers have a ridge on the inside that the steel ones don't have...........

I use Ultra Blue RTV and let it set up 24 hrs. If you have cruise control and use a gasket you might have to modify the mount that holds the diaphram that controls the carb. The bracket interferes with the cover when it is spaced higher by the gasket since GM used RTV originaly.

I replaced my leaky L-82, aluminum valve cover gaskets with these Jegs units http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...0002_434605_-1 There were no-more leaks and I have removed the covers several times already for various reasons. They resealed perfectly every time. I used RTV on both sides as suggested in another post.

as far as sealers go, i like the spray hylomar, it's a little more "sticky" than the hylomar in a tube (my second choice)
