I'm replacing my frame for the 3 storage doors in the rear. After taking a good look at the job, I see the original hinges are attached with large rivets.
Wanted to get some ideas on best ways to reattach the old hinges to a new frame.
The hinge doors on my 69 are held on by the original pan head screws, I think. The frame to which each door is attached was riveted to the body. It uses an L shapped backing plate on the outside, just so we are on the same page. When I re-did mine, I removed the old corroded rivets and replaced them with s/s pan head screws and nylock nuts on the outside. The pan head screws are too thick and keep the door from closing. I cut them down a little with a dremmel and they work fine. Rivets would work also, if you have someone to help out. You may need to grind one side of the rivet head flat to fit inside the door frame. I did this many years ago, so I'm doing my best from memory and hope it helps.
You can get the rivets at one of the corvette vendors. It is too tight of an area for screws.
You need the flat headed rivets
Just did this last winter. Ordered the correct rivets and had to cut about 1/8" off then so that when I hit them with a small hammer they mushroomed (flattened) instead of bending like a long nail would do into wood if you hit it wrong.
