what kind of thermo fan sensor are you all using over there. i need to get a sensor set up for my thermo but dont want one of the type that sneak in under the radiator hose like the untidy davies craig system. im trying to find one that screws into the manifold or the head . something that is reliable with around a 190 on and 170 off setting. can you ppease show me pics of your set up???

I think Dewitt's now sells a simple fan controller instead of the SPAL controller. They put a bung into the radiator for the sensor, but if you buy a thermostat housing for a 79 Vette it will have a threaded hole that a temp sensor will fit into. I was using a drop-base air cleaner and the sensor just barely cleared it, but it did clear.
Let me guess. It's the switched ground based on engine temp. Hot wire goes to fan where it has a constant connection. This T-stat switch is in the block and when it reaches 195 it closes the ground connection to the block letting the fan run until the engine temp reaches 175.
I have a very similar setup on my transmission cooler fan and I like the simplicity. For a basic on and off controller this is very clever and simple.
If you want variable speed though this kind of controller won't work.

I may look into getting one myself.
That is correct, but the sensor screws in the head, or the intake. This does the job, controls both Spals.
Give Sixfooter a yell. I used a parts list and wiring diagram he posted several months ago that works like a charm. If I can find it at home I will post the part numbers.
thanks everybody. i ended up buying the same sensor kit as DK-corvette. it was the only one available to me over here. it seems to be a good set up except the threaded probe is only very small like a 5/16 thread unlike the one in the pic so i had to get a male/female bush so it could connect to my manifold.will install it soon .
Hi Ginger,
There was a male/female bush included in my kit that made it fit directly in my cylinder head.
About the wiring then I has connected the yellow together with the red to battery+. This makes the fan run after you have shut of the engine, cooling down the cooler and engine surrounding. It runs a little long, 5-6 minutes, but it makes a big difference in the under hood temperature compared to a fan that shuts of together with the engine.
I have a SB with alu heads and it might be that the fan will run for a longer time with iron heads and/or BB, but you can always change the yellow over to ignition+ as a fall back solution.
And finally, adjusting the temp turn-on/of level is made totally opposite of what the instruction tells you to do. So turning clockwise lowers the temp instead of raising it!!! It took me a little while to figure that one out.
thanks for the hot tips DK ..that is all good news and will give some thought to running it after the engine turns off.it always scares me that it may just keep running when i have walked away and not stop so might just go the simple wire up. when i bought the sensor kit and resad the instructions it was totally wrong becasue it says stick the probe in the radiator fins ( totally different set up ) as to what was in the box. i didnt want that kind of sensor anyway but there quality control in there packaging department cant be very good if they use out-dated instruction leaflets.....aluminium heads rock ! i have fast burns . what you running?

Hi Ginger,
I have a set of the new AFR 195 Eliminators on my new engine. I put in a new alu radiator, electric fan and the Derale fan control together with a new crate engine and it all seems to work just fine.
If you decide to wire the control like I have it is a good idea to put a little fuse on the yellow one. I'm planning to add one on mine like a 5 amp.
Also if the fan should be running too long it should be possible to add some sort of timer relay so you can set the running time to you preference.
