OK, I'm dying here trying to make sense of anything but aftermarket EFI. Is anything possible with newer gen 454 EFI set up and sensors? IS aftermarket the only possibility? Was wondering about a truck intake and injector setup that I saw questioned. Thanks ....ready to walk away from this thought

If you are going to use the later Gen big blocks, I think all you have to do is swap out the cam, perform some head work, and have the ECU replaced or flashed with updated programming.

They are designed for low RPM torque so I don't see why they couldn't be re-mapped using better parts and parameters.

That I do not know about. I would guess so because I remember hearing that the heads fit all the way up to GenVI but I do not know for sure. I also know that you will need a tall hood for the intake.

the gen vi vortec manifold will bolt on. But you will need to do some grinding on the ports to open them up to your heads. They are sized for pretty small ovals (almost peanut ports). If you have all the sensors and distributor might I suggest getting a Megasquirt DIY computer. It should be a pretty esay hook up and the computer is abotu $350 un-assembled. Very easy to setup and use/tune.

Also if you want a little better intake, look for a Mercury Marine 454/502 intake on eaby. It has much better runners for power production and is available in oval and rectange port. I'm planning on using one of these myself.

The vortec manifold is nice but its tuned for low end and not much over 4000 r's. I have thought about cutting off the top and then reworking the runners in the vortec manifold I have but I'm not going to be installing it on a 454 in my truck so teh torque is what I want.

Here's what the merc intakes look like ebay linky
I paid about $200 for the lower intake without an the parts a pieces, these are a little high for what they are giving you. Search for mercrusier and see what you can come up with.

The Vortec stuff is going to be difficult to make anything out of. The Mercury intake is basically the same setup used by Arizona Speed and Marine (take a look at their website). Your best option for a plenum style intake is the GM Ramjet.

The easiest would be a Holley throttle body setup. Search this forum or Chevytalk.com for member Zwede. He has a very nice website that documents this.

bb69 has a Megasquirt system on his '69 427. (Or does he have a 454 block in there now? I don't remember. Either way, he's using the MS and he's pretty happy with it.)
