Are you going to replace the carb? If thats in the plan, just buy one with it and hook the choke wire to a switched hot wire. If not, what kind of carb is on there now?

Are you going to change the complete carb.or do you just want to install the choke in the housing? I'm pretty sure if it's a quadrajet you can buy a electric choke coil for a newer year then all you have to do is run a hot wire to the coil but when you run the wire make sure that it is hot when key on. I hope this answers your question. The price for the choke coil should be around 20 to 25 dollars

I just did this conversion on My 77 a couple of months ago, it's a major improvement over the hot air choke.

Cost is under $50 using the Q-Jet Electric Choke conversion from Edelbrock - it's an exact reproduction of the GM 1979 electric choke. You pop out the hot air choke, remove the cover gasket, and install the electric choke. Hook up a wire to the wiper motor or an "IGN" source in your fusebox. That's it. It works no better than a functional hot air choke, but it works a lot better than a broken hot air choke...

Does anyone have a picture of which wire on the wiper motor to hook up to?

Just take an idiot light and touch the wiper motor wires. Whichever wire lights the idiot light when you tuirn the ignition on is good to use.

One question about the electric choke. Let's say you're having trouble starting the engine, perhaps it cranks over but doesn't start. As you're working on the engine, I would imagine the electric choke is getting hotter and hotter and eventually will open up the choke trottle plate (whatever it's called). Now with the choke in the open position, aren't you going to have even more trouble getting you're balky engine to start?

My ZZ4 carb has an electric choke and I thought about putting a small switch on the choke heater wire. Haven't done it though since my engine fires up immediately. (Thanks to all the distributor timing and vacuum advance learning from reading forum posts.)

As I recall on my '76 it's the yellow wire.
