Replacement of Front Pillar Post Weatherstrip
Just replaced the driver's side front pillar post weatherstrip on a 1980.
I struggled with trying to find the holes for the 4 screws that go thru
the weatherstrip into the pillar post. As there is no metal reinforcement
within the weatherstrip, the screws don't help hold the weatherstrip
but just seem to pass thru it.
Am I missing something or is it easier to just leave the screws alone
and position the weatherstrip over the screws? On the original
weatherstrip there is a piece of metal reinforcement molded into
the top which I believe the upper screw passes thru. So after
removing the weatherstrip reattach this screw, as the replacement
does not have the metal reinforcement. Plan to replace the
passenger side this way unless there is a need to fasten the screws
thru the weatherstrip?
The weatherstrip was purchased from Corvette Rubbber.

I ended up removing the stainless trim strip that holds the seal. Mine was not aligned well.....must have been a Monday or Friday. I slotted the holes to allow for movement fore and aft. Then I just slide the weatherstrip in place and secure with one of the special screws at the very top. If you drive yours in the rain, be sure to mark the WS holder piece, remove and apply silicone sealant behind it. You will also need to silicone the seal the entire length.
PS, the part I am refering to is not only held with screws, but has double face mounting tape on the back. You might have to work it away gently with a plastic wedge.
And yes, there should be several spot where screws are installed through the strip. Make sure the heads are deep in the crack and close the door carefully with the window up to be sure it does not hit the edge of the glass.

You need the metal backings from the original seals. Clean off all the old rubber seal and bond your new seals to it. Then you can install with screws and they will tighten to the plate. If i rember correctly thoes backings have an edge the the rubber seal slideds into and that helps hold the seal to the plate.

Looks like on my car the metal backing plate stayed on the car when
I removed the weatherstrip. Makes sense now why you would put
the screws thru the weatherstrip if you first bonded the weatherstrip
to the backing plate.

Those screws go into the metal retainer. There is only one screw at the top that goes through the w/s. A small strip of glue and the retainer holds the rubber. Clean out the grooves in the retainer for the w/s to go into the grooves.
