Default replacing distributor

Hey guys I'm in the process of trying to replace my distributor. I set up my reference points with the previous distributor but this one still has about 3/16 of an inch to drop in. The instructions say to rotate the motor until it seats. I have no idea how to manually rotate and engine and was wondering if you could help me out. Any help would be appreciated.

The oil pump shaft is not in alignment with the key on the bottom of the distributor. Pull the distributor and rotate the oil drive to align with the distributor. Don't rotate the engine or you have screwed up the timing. You might want to the go to the tech section and read the paper by Lars on putting in a chevy distributor and the one on timing an engine.

shine a light down the distributor hole. You will see a slotted shaft. Take a screwdriver and rotate it to line up roughly with your distributor. If you look on the bottom of your distributor you will see the slotted end that fits in the oil pump shaft.
