Need Advice from California Cam Guys
Hey guys, I need your help with a cam selection that will pass smog test in California. I have an 80 with a rebuilt 355, 750 QJet, Edelbrock Performer EGR manifold and 64cc aluminum heads, KB hyper 12cc dish pistons, stock exhaust manifolds, AIR pump, a new 3" Magnaflow cat and 2 1/2" exhaust. I figure about 9.5 CR. I currently have the mildest Lunati VooDoo cam: 207/213 @.050, 112 LSA I like this cam, but. do you think I will offend the smog police with a slight bump up to the next VooDoo 113/119 @ .050, 112 LSA and .454/.468 lift? I just want a torquey street engine, but I gotta pass smog. Also, what size cam do you run and still pass the test? Thanks.

This is the cam I run right now - its a hyd roller though - prior to that I ran a Schnieder custom grind...basicly an L82 cam but ground on 110 centers instead of 112.
Both smog fine.
Both smog fine.

This Crane 272 with 1.6 roller tip rockers passed for me every year.
It is a 216/228 112 LSA You can always do little things for the test like pull off the full vacuum line on the side of the carb to the vacuum brakes and just for the test instantly lean out the mixture if you are high on hydrocarbons or if you are high on CO or NO's you can retard the timing for the test. With any of these mild cams it is not the cam that determines whether you pass or fail it is the state of tune, fresh oil, clean air cleaner that makes the difference.
